 Adding Capacity versus Building Capacity  Build Capacity through the Gradual Release of Responsibility  School improvement is everyone’s responsibility

 Winter Collection Window: Jan 12 – Feb. 2  Build on and refine the system you developed for Fall Collection ◦ Who gives the tests? ◦ When and where are the tests given? ◦ How is the assessment schedule determined? ◦ How are materials and resources organized? ◦ Who enters data into websites? How can you begin to release responsibility ? Think about creating a School Wide Action Plan for Data Collection

QuestionsPersonnelSuggestions Who Collects?Classroom teacher, Classroom assistants if available 2 students a day Jan 12 – Feb. 2 Where Does Collection Take Place? In classroom-After small group reading instruction -Other independent work times -During specials How Does the Collection Take Place? Assesses 2 students a day -Consider starting with benchmark students first AdvantagesDisadvantages Teachers test their own students Additional assessors not needed Most sustainable model Less disruptive to school Teachers need regular refreshers and reliability checks Problems with standardized administration can occur Additional responsibilities for teacher

QuestionsPersonnelSuggestions Who Collects?-Support staff and educational assistants -Selected teachers are released with subs Jan 12 – Feb. 2 6-10 assessors needed Where Does Collection Take Place? Central location\ - cafeteria - library - classroom -After small group reading instruction -Independent work times -During specials How Does the Collection Take Place? -Team goes to classroom while students quietly work supervised by teacher -Classrooms go to central location -Runners are helpful -Either whole class or small groups at a time AdvantagesDisadvantages Fewer people assist with data collection Fewer people need refreshers and reliability checks Easier to ensure standardized administration a Reduce work load for teachers Scheduling challenges Classroom teacher is not involved in data collection Schools do not always have additional support staff available If teachers are used, requires budgeting for substitutes

QuestionsPersonnelSuggestions Who Collects?Grade-level teachers & educational assistants Other available support can help Where Does Collection Take Place? In one of the grade-level classrooms with students waiting to be tested in another classroom Data collection is set up in adjacent room How Does the Collection Take Place? All students from a grade go to one classroom and are given an independent activity that requires minimal supervision. Students are pulled and quickly assessed Can usually be done in 1 day AdvantagesDisadvantages Teachers have opportunity to test some of their own students Easier to ensure standardized administration Can typically get an entire grade done in one day Detracts from instructional time A qualified person needs to supervise children while data is collected
