INDUSTRIAL AND ELECTRONICS APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT DIVISION R&D IN ELECTRONICS GROUP

RESPONSIBILITIES To promote development and application of Electronics and Information Technology based products/systems for: l Various industry and infrastructure sectors like Power, Transportation and core manufacturing industries. l Agriculture sector l Water Resources sector

OBJECTIVES l To contribute significantly towards enhancement of the country’s design and application capability in emerging areas of technology l To create a significant pool of experienced manpower in such areas l To demonstrate improvement in productivity, quality and safety by application of emerging technologies l To assist the industry - particularly the SME sector by making available to them cost-effective state-of-art technologies

MAJOR TECHNOLOGIES PURSUED l Distribution Automation (IT in Power) l Intelligent Transportation Systems (IT in Transport) l Power Electronics (Wide application Spectrum) l Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies including Robotics l Specific Instrumentation for Steel, Textile, Mining, etc. l Generic technologies: SCADA/DCS/EMS/Sensors (Wide application Spectrum)

METHODOLOGY FOLLOWED l Project formulation - Proposals evolved by the Division through continuous interaction with industry, users, academic and R&D institutes l Project Implementation - DIT’s own societies C-DAC, SAMEER. - National laboratories, namely, CSIR, CPRI, etc. - Academic institutions like IITs, IISc and other technical institutes l User participation is ensured in field demonstration projects

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS - MAJOR EXAMPLES l Distribution Automation System in Trivandrum City 5 substations, 120 remote locations and the Central Control Station automated and integrated through H/W and S/W developed by C-DAC(T). Dedicated UHF communication link allows on-line monitoring and remote control of the distribution network. Worked jointly with the KSEB. l Automation of the Teesta Hydel Stations Retrofitting of the three stations through H/W and S/W developed by C-DAC(T) enables the user (WBSEB) to monitor and control these remote stations from a central place round the clock

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS (contd…) l Urban Traffic Control System Basic Controller H/W and application S/W developed and tested at Trivandrum and Pune l Advanced Traffic Control System Based on above technology, further upgraded system has now been implemented with 38 junctions and a Central Control Station in Pune City.Online vehicle detection allows optimum signal timings and smooth control of traffic. Implemented by C-DAC(T) with active support by Pune Municipal Corporation

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS (contd…) l Custom Power Technology Essentially a complex electronics H/W system to improve quality of electric power. The first successful development in the country of this high power system by C-DAC(T) is operational at Peekay Steels, Calicut l Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) A High-end application of Power Electronics technology to enhance transmission capability of existing AC lines by 30-40%. This first development project has been implemented by BHEL on the Kanpur-Ballabhgarh 400 KV AC Line.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS (contd…) l WebNC Project A complex engineering software developed at IIT-Bombay. Attempts collaborative design and CNC machining using the Internet - a firm step towards Telemanufacturing. Possibility of a good S/W product. l National Mission on Power Electronics Technology An on-going Rs.25 crores project under collaborative arrangement with C-DAC(T) as Nodal agency and 6 academic institutes, 5 industries as partners. R&D infrastructure upgradation at Nodal Centre and institutes nearing completion. Several futuristic technology development projects have been initiated and results have started coming. Short-term courses/ workshops being held regularly.

RECENT TECHNOLOGY TRANSFERS UTCS : Webel, Kolkata/Meltron, Mumbai DA : Micromax, Trichy/Tulip IT Services, Delhi STATCOM: Industrial Controls & Drives, Chennai/ Veeral Controls, Ahmedabad/Power One Systems, Bangalore ATCS :Currently processing ToT request of Webel, Kolkata/BEL,B’Lore & KELTRON C-DAC entrusted with replication projects for Jaipur and Shillong
