The increased amount of training for all classes (knob through senior) is to help instill honor and reinforce it throughout the duration of a cadet’s time at The Citadel.

Understand the importance of using these forms correctly, and truthfully, as they carry a significant weight to them.

15 Achieving Excellence in the Education of Principled Leaders Prepared by the 2007 Honor Committee As of 2 March 2007 Charleston Passes (CP) The abuse of this pass bears no different consequences than the misuse of any other official document. As stated on the rear of the pass: “This is an official document. The use of this document constitutes an official statement. The misrepresentation of this card could violate the Cadet Honor Code.”

19 Achieving Excellence in the Education of Principled Leaders Prepared by the 2007 Honor Committee As of 2 March 2007 Case Study 1 Cadet A lived in the Trailers during the overflow period. Around 2430 during general leave Cadet A received a phone call from her boyfriend. He said that he needed to speak with her right away in private and that he was outside the Barracks. Cadet A decided to bring him into her room. As they were talking Cadet A learned that her boyfriends’ parents had just died a few hours ago. Cadet A began consoling him as someone knocked on the door and said “All Clear”. Cadet A hurried to the door and met the cadet, who was the division inspector, doing All-ins. The Division Inspector asked the cadet if there was anyone else in the room, because he had heard two voices. Cadet A responded that She was the only one in the room and shut the door. Cadet A then continued to console her boyfriend and then let him head home when she thought he was capable. Cadet A then went to confront the division inspector, told him what happened and that she didn’t want to tell him someone was in the room because of her boyfriends situation. Did Cadet A commit an Honor Violation?

20 Achieving Excellence in the Education of Principled Leaders Prepared by the 2007 Honor Committee As of 2 March 2007 Case Study 1 Review Did Cadet A commit an Honor Violation? Yes, Cadet A lied to the Division Inspector doing All- ins when she was asked if there was someone else in the room and she responded that there was not. Did Cadet A have other options besides lying? Yes, Cadet A was in a difficult situation but there were a lot of choices Cadet A could’ve made besides sacrificing her honor. What would you have done?

21 Achieving Excellence in the Education of Principled Leaders Prepared by the 2007 Honor Committee As of 2 March 2007 Case Study 2 Cadet K had Tours and was Restricted to campus on Saturday. Cadet K also had a date on Saturday that he had been looking forward to all week. Cadet K waited for the ten-minute window during which he would be accounted for on the Tours Sheet and Restrictions Sheet. After he was accounted for, Cadet K left campus to meet his date at Moe's. Cadet K did not march a single tour that day nor serve a single restriction. He did excuse himself from his date every hour to make it back for the ten-minute window to be accounted for. The Battalion Duty Officer finally caught Cadet K coming back on campus after his date at the end of the day. The Battalion Duty Officer notified the Battalion Honor Representative of what had happened and Cadet K was formally accused of the Honor Violation of Lying. Did Cadet K commit an Honor Violation?

22 Achieving Excellence in the Education of Principled Leaders Prepared by the 2007 Honor Committee As of 2 March 2007 Case Study 1 Review Has Cadet K committed an honor violation? The committee charged to investigate this offense recommended the charges be dropped. Although Cadet K had not marched a single tour nor remained on campus that day, he had been present during the ten- minute widows during which accountability was taken. By signing the Tours Sheet and Restrictions Sheet, Cadet K is stating that he was present at the Duty Location during the ten-minute window. That is all that Cadet K is signing for when he initialed the sheets. The Honor Code cannot be used to make cadets incriminate themselves. It is the responsibility of the Weekend Duty Teams to ensure the punishments are being served properly.
