8 State nickname State motto  The Land of Enchantment  The nickname for New Mexico is The Land of Enchantment (Tierra del Encanto in Spanish) because of its scenic beauty and rich history (the nickname was officially adopted in 1999). New Mexico also recognizes a state ballad titled "Land of Enchantment - New Mexicostate ballad  New Mexico's state motto is the Latin phrase "Crescit eundo," which translates as It grows as it goes. 9  STATEHOOD:New Mexico was acquired by the United States as a result of the controversial U.S.-Mexican war (1846-1848). On August 18, 1846, three months after the U.S. declaration of war with Mexico, U.S. General Stephen Kearny and his army marched into and took possession of Santa Fe and New Mexico. In 1848, the war with Mexico ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Two years later, on September 9, 1850, the U.S. Congress passed an Organic Act, which created the Territory of New Mexico and authorized its civil government.Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

11  Oil is Mexico’s main export and the largest generator of foreign income in the country. Mexico is the sixth largest oil producing country in the world, producing 3.7 million barrels daily. In fact, the production of oil is regulated by the Mexican government with private companies handling the production and shipping of oil.

12  The state capital is Santé Fe.
