6 Faculty of Arts Approach to Recruitment All departments within the Faculty apply a holistic approach to UCAS applications, with varying emphasis on each of the three key elements of the application: grades, personal statement and academic reference. Generally speaking, an offer will be made on the overall satisfaction of those three components and in strict adherence to departmental and university admissions statements and regulations.

8 Admissions policies Criteria for assessing the Personal Statement and Reference will include, for example: Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the subject Evidence of clear thinking and understanding Appropriateness of the Bristol course to the candidate's declared interests and aspirations Non-academic achievement and/or experience, or extra- curricular interests, that indicate the likely contribution a candidate will make to the life of the University Other relevant skills – eg languages

10 Admissions success An excellent Personal Statement will include, for example: Well reasoned, articulate motives for wanting to study subject backed by evidence of interest and commitment. Multiple examples of wider interest (attending university master class, summer school, lecture, visit to museums). A sophisticated understanding of how subjects studied at school and/or interests relate to chosen subject & department. Strong evidence of powers of analysis and expression, sophisticated vocabulary, error free. High level of critical thinking.
