Education Technology Services Build a Rubric

Education Technology Services Click Start to begin the wizard.

Education Technology Services Can add columns Can add rows

Education Technology Services Add Rubric information and enough detail in the cells to give students an idea of what is expected. Can add new sections with different grade scales

Education Technology Services Test run the rubric to make sure it yields the expected results. Then publish into the rubric gallery.

Education Technology Services Attach a Rubric to a Gradebook Item

Education Technology Services The rubric system is integrated in the Gradebook function. After setting up a gradebook item as normal, you attach a rubric.

Education Technology Services Click “Select Rubric” to go to the rubric library and attach the rubric to the assignment.

Education Technology Services The “Attach a Rubric” screen pops up. Here you click “select a rubric”. A list of available rubrics will appear. The rubrics are created using a rubric wizard. The wizard is very flexible.

Education Technology Services We see a list of available rubrics and pick the one we want by clicking “Select”. This is a shared library of rubrics. Each faculty/instructor can create their own rubric, use one that someone else created, or modify one that is already created to make it their own.

Education Technology Services Click “Save” to complete the attachment process. A separate rubric can be assigned to each gradebook item.

Education Technology Services Grade Using iRubric

Education Technology Services Click on the Rubric icon to grade this assignment using the attached rubric.

Education Technology Services Add comments to give the student tips for improvement. The student gets clear feedback on areas for improvement and also, by seeing the rubric, knows what is expected. It is this level of detail that, in Bloomington, we were cited as in need of improvement by the SPA’s. Click on the cells and the rubric is automatically totaled and scored.

Education Technology Services The system calculates the scores based upon how the rubric was initially defined and how it was set up in the rubric assignment screen.

Education Technology Services The system keeps a change log to see history.

Fall 2009 pilot results

Fall 2009 pilot – survey /stats Four instructors and their assistant instructors Created one to six rubrics Used all but one rubric that was created Overall satisfaction was high –Easy to create –Easy to grade Confused about student access to rubrics prior to grading Most instructors were trained individually –15 – 30 minutes of time per person Education Technology Services

Fall 2009 pilot - comments The iRubric web site is very helpful and the process is very intuitive Now that it is developed, I expect I will use it again next year with minor modifications I REALLY liked it. I think it would be quite helpful to instructors and would provide easy access to data for the quality assurance purposes in the Student Teaching Office. I’d like to be able to type more in the comments section. If there was a way to make it more transparent with the gradebook so students are forced to see it, that would be helpful Education Technology Services
