3 In November 2008, the 802.16 Working Group has approved the creation of a WG Ad Hoc Committee with the objective of promoting discussion on robustness and reliability Committee reflector and document upload area –http://dot16nrr-reflector.wirelessman.orghttp://dot16nrr-reflector.wirelessman.org –http://dot16nrr.wirelessman.orghttp://dot16nrr.wirelessman.org Study the potential interest of the WG to launch a new standardization activity for a highly-reliable and highly- robust 802.16 system NRR WG Ad Hoc Committee

4 NRR objectives and plan At the 802.16 session #62 closing plenary, the Working Group had authorized the NRR Ad Hoc Committee to work on draft PAR and top level technical approaches Activities carried out since session #62 No NRR meetings planned at the Interim sessions #63 and #63.5 Technical discussions on the reflector (72 emails) 3 Conference calls have been organized Main documents available for review NRR technical report (C80216nrr-08_004r3) Draft PAR and 5 Criteria (C80216nrr-09_033r1)

5 Technical approach Proposed Baseline : –Modification of the OFDMA PHY, MAC and management interfaces –Addressing both fixed and mobile systems –Operation without infrastructure –Support for Mobile Base Station –Provision of resilience capabilities –Provision of reliable path selectivity –Lower duty cycle operation (reduction of energy consumption) –Support for spectrum flexibility below 6GHz –Support for legacy WirelessMAN-OFDMA equipment

6 Technical approach Legacy network Infrastructure NRR NRR network main characteristics - Possible operation without infrastructure - Resilience capabilities - Reliable path selectivity - Lower duty cycle for reducing energy consumption In-coverage NRR network NRR Out-of-coverage NRR network BSRSSS / MSWire link Wireless link

7 Technical approach Legacy network Infrastructure BSRSSS / MSWire link Wireless link Reconfigurable Node

8 Technical approach NRR Network Infrastructure BSRSSS / MSWire link Wireless link Inter-Cell Communications NRR network with loss of infrastructure; -Node reconfiguration -Inter-cell communication
