1  Write the following vocabulary word in your Unit 2 Assessment 2 vocabulary:  Synthesize: to combine objects or ideas into a complex whole. Entry Task Today you’ll need your journal, SpringBoard, writing utensil, and your assigned chromebook (don’t open until told to).

2  Fill in the chart on page 164 with details that help you understand how each element is used in each film. You will use this content frame organizer to synthesize similarities and differences among the films that you have studied. 2.23: Content Frame

3  In your Pre-AP/IB E folder, create a document titled [last name] Burton Style Analysis Log in to your computer- including the filter; open google docs.

4  Draft 3 analytical thesis statements that make a claim about Tim Burton’s style as represented by the effective use of specific cinematic techniques. From your completed content frame graphic organizer, select 3 cinematic techniques to create thesis options.  Example theses:  Tim Burton manipulates lighting to __[effect]__.  Through his use of cinematic elements, Tim Burton creates grotesque characters in order to __[effect]__.  Tim Burton uses the continuous change in camera angles in order to ___[effect]___.  By using multiple editing techniques in his films, Tim Burton is able to __[effect]__.  Through Burton’s presentation of flashbacks, he [effect]. Drafting: Think about the Burton films you have viewed and analyzed. Choose three or four stylistic elements that are common to these films. Write an essay analyzing the cinematic style of the director. Your essay should focus on the ways in which the director uses stylistic techniques across films to achieve a desired effect.

5  Using the template outline on page 166, plan your body paragraphs (3- 1 for each element or film).  Each body paragraph needs to have a specific claim related to your thesis.  Each body paragraph needs to include evidence (MINIMUM 3 pieces of evidence).  Commentary: explaining the detail and how it, as cinematic technique, fulfills the identified effect. Outline- HW if not finished.

6  Thesis:  Supporting Claim #1:  Evidence (with brief commentary notes)  Supporting Claim #2  Evidence (with brief commentary notes)  Supporting Claim #3  Evidence (with brief commentary notes) Minimum requirements needed for tomorrow (1/22)

7  Draft your essay- focusing on the body/supporting paragraphs.  Remember to stay focused on the prompt:  Think about the Burton films you have viewed and analyzed. Choose three or four stylistic elements that are common to these films. Write an essay analyzing the cinematic style of the director. Your essay should focus on the ways in which the director uses stylistic techniques across films to achieve a desired effect. 1/22: Drafting Day- grab your assigned chrome book and get to work.

8  Complete vocabulary quiz and then turn in to the basket. Entry Task: 5 minutes to study

9  Introduction Strategy: begin with background of Tim Burton (2-3 sentences). Introduce the three films you will be using (1-2 sentences). Transition to the thesis. State thesis.  Body paragraphs 1, 2, & 3  Conclusion: wrap up your analysis. Then address a thematic message we can learn through the style and effect you have addressed. [Wrap up…] By presenting characters the way he does, Burton effectively teaches the world that, sometimes, being different isn’t negative, and it’s only through embracing what makes us different and special, do we learn who we truly are. Once we learn and accept who we truly are, maybe then, we too can make a difference like Alice, Edward and Wonka did. Intro and Conclusion
