Mark 1:21-28 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

Mark 1:21-28 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!”

Mark 1:21-28 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

Mark 1:21-28 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

A Day In The Life Of Jesus Mark 1:21-39 Hardin Valley Church Of Christ 7-13-2014

We can ’ t let the busyness of life keep us from the Father ’ s business. There ’ s a big difference between activity and accomplishment.

Mark gives us a picture of 24 hours in the life of Jesus.

Mark 1:21-28 21 They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us?

I know who You are, the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “ Be quiet, and come out of him! ” 26 Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.

Where did the synagogue come from?

Developed during Babylonian captivity and spread through the Jewish world.

It was primarily a teaching institution. There was no alter there.

A synagogue would have elders, a ruler who presided, kept the order and picked the preacher for the week. They loved to hear from visiting rabbis.

Jesus taught with authority. What He said was self-authenticating. He didn't have to quote someone else for it to sound true.

saying, “ What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are– the Holy One of God! ” (Mark 1:24) What does that say about their worship?

Mark has a lot to say about demons.  For now, notice that the demons recognized the role of judgment in Jesus ’ ministry.  “ have you come to destroy us? ”  Notice also the demons know who Jesus is.

News about Him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. What a service!

 Mark 1:29-34  Lots of important lessons.  Take the preacher home for a meal after he preaches.  You find out what ministry is... it is your response to Jesus ’ ministry to you.

Why doesn't Jesus let the demons testify to who He is?

 Why did the people come that night?  To hear Jesus preach or to receive healing?  Motive is relief not repentance.  A lot of people today see religion as an ambulance to get them relief but not where you live life. They come to receive but tragically leave with no purpose.

Mark 1:35-39 35 In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions searched for Him; 37 they found Him, and said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You” 38 He said to them, “Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for.” 39 And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.

 Mark doesn‘t talk much about Jesus’ prayer life but every time he does there is a crisis.  Chapter 6 – Multitude is fed, they want to make Him King...  Chapter 14 – Cross is in front of Him and He has to decide whether He will do His Father ’ s will.  Chapter 1 – What ’ s the crisis?

Matthew 11:23-24 23 “ And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. 24 Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you. ”

Prayer takes discipline and brings discernment.  Jesus anticipated the demands & got up early.  James 1:5

Our desire is not to escape, but to impact our world.

When a person gets up off their knees determined that day to see God ’ s world & be God ’ s person the gates of hell tremble. GET UP OFF YOUR KNEES.

 You will be busy whether you pray or not.  Prayer keeps the good from squeezing out the best, the important from displacing the imperative.

Peace Perfect Peace By thronging duties pressed? To do the will of Jesus, This is rest...
