Mark 1:22 - 24 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

Mark 1:25 - 27 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, in so much that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Living Bible Verse 22 The congregation was surprised at His sermon because He spoke as an authority, and didn’t try to prove his points by quoting others- quite unlike what they were used to hearing.

Commentary Good Morning friends! I rejoice that we are here today to celebrate the goodness of the Lord. We acknowledge today that every promise in him is yes and amen. This passage talks about Jesus' teaching ministry along with showing comparisons between that of his teaching and the teachings of the Pharisees.

The scene takes us to the synagogue where Jesus takes up the book and begins to read. To many surprise, there was a profound difference when hearing the word of God from him than when they listened to the teaching of the Pharisees They instantly realized a difference. My friend what was this difference? They said he spoke as one with authority?

When Jesus stood his words were life giving that offered a life line and a way out. The hearts were pricked and blind eyes were opened. He spoke not only from a place of power but authority that rose above racial, gender, class, political and religious barriers and bondage's. He spoke from a place of heaven and promise. Although the words that he spoke revealed the need to deal with sin, but offered grace to overcome.

It is here that I believe folk recognize that this power was a different power. He spoke to the many who were gathered around and had heard these readings time and time again. Yet on this day, the anointing gave way to a different sound. A sound from heaven and not religion. This is the sound that the church should be voicing. The sound not so much of religiosity. But a life giving sound that has the power to reconcile, deliver, and restore.

This power was not a force or coercion of tradition of legalism but a sound from one with rightful power of grace that offers victory. Donna Lee Bowen a professor of Political Science takes a look at " Power vs Authority". She says, " there is a power exerted by sheer force and coercion. Authority on the other hand depends upon an individuals perception of it's rightness. In other words, "Authority is defined as a rightful power”.

Which brings me to this question for us today. Whose authority and power are we standing on today? Are we learning how to operate in our rightful authority through the Word of God? Are we learning how to operate in our rightful authority through the Word of God? Are you learning to use this authority that Jesus gives to every believer? Are you learning to use this authority that Jesus gives to every believer? Dr. Janice Gilbert, Senior Pastor McKinney United Methodist Church

Life Application Statement The enemy is not afraid of power in and of itself, but it's our authority in Christ. This authority grants permission to overcome.

Life Application Principles 1. Our authority is based in relationship. We must understand and recognize authentic authority before processing it. 2. This authority grants us permission and we are not without help. 3.The enemy has power, but he is not all powerful.

Life Application Principles When Jesus showed up in church it wasn't church as usual. First it was not lawful to heal on the Sabbath, not only that demons knew who he was when the so called church people who had been talking about his kingdom was blinded by their own tradition.

Life Application Principles For many this was a new teaching, a teaching that did not just tell them about their sins and what things to do when you sin. But this new doctrine was one that showed folks how to come out. How live, how to get victory. This new doctrine showed grace and mercy hand and hand. Copyright 2012 Copyright 2012
