Nuclear Energy Cesar Zapata Jr Class:607

Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is a non- renewable energy source because once you use it, it's done for good. It comes from the atoms of fossil fuels, the nucleus. It gets formed by slicing an atom in half, called nuclear fission, or nuclear fusion, the combining of 2 atoms. One example is plutonium. When a small amount of it is fissioned, it creates massive heat. Another example is the Sun and stars. They make light because of natural nuclear reactions.

Is Nuclear Energy Renewable or Non-Renewable?  Nuclear energy is non- renewable. It is non-renewable because once you split the atom or combine the 2 atoms, the atoms cannot form together again and the atoms become unstable. They then have to lock this material in a special place, NEVER TO USE AGAIN. They have to mine for more plutonium, which is a fossil fuel, so nuclear energy is limited.

Nuclear Energy to Electrical Energy  Here is the general steps to create nuclear energy to electrical energy. When you split the atoms, or fuse them together, you get a huge explosion, then you trap that explosion, and that creates heat. You trap that heat, then you use that heat to heat the water, the water turns to steam, and the steam turns the turbine, which powers up the generator, and gives electricity. The diagram is in the next slide.

NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

ADVANTAGES  -It is cheap once built.  -It can produce electricity.  -It produces more energy than coal power plants.  -It does not cause acid rain or global warming

DISADVANTAGES  -It makes radioactive waste.  -Once you use it, it's gone.  -It could make huge explosions that could kill people.  -It could kill animals if they do not contain the unstable atoms in one place.
