What will my kid learn in chemistry this year?  How do electronegativity and ionization energy affect bond formation and substance properties?  When 25g of octane is burned, how much carbon dioxide is formed, and how much energy is created?  How do nuclear power plants work?  How do atoms create light?  Why are sugar and salt solids when water is liquid and carbon dioxide is a gas?  How do molecules transfer heat energy?

2014-2015: Chemistry Class with

About me  Third year at OCSA  Parent of a second grader  Actually love science  Socially awkward  Dog named Janet Reno

Education  High School: Long Beach Poly  Undergrad: Bachelor’s of Science from UCSD in Chemistry and Biochemistry  Grad School: Penn State Organic Chemistry Program  Teaching Credential: CSU Long Beach

Research Work  Nitto Denko Technical Corp Organic Synthesis  NASA Ames Research Center Nanomaterial Synthesis

Goals for my students  Understand the world  Be challenged and succeed  Connect the content to their lives and talents  Learn skills to help them in the future College Workplace

Philosophy  Memorization is a 20 th century skill Need Problem Solving, communication, and critical thinking  Students in 10 th -12 th grade need to be responsible I respect their decisions Expect them to read directions  Technology skills are important Frequent online component to homework I will teach students some tech

Some policies to note  Late Policy: only 6 chances /semester No change in assignment grade for late work  When students are absent: Read and take notes on book pages If for sickness, etc, get an extra block for each block missed If for vacation, conservatory, work, etc: no extension – see me beforehand! Should check in when back at school

Class Organization  Class Documents on Sharepoint  Unit Calendars

Grades  Tests: 100-200 pts 1 retake per semester  Labs: 15-50 pts Graded on accuracy  Homework: 5 pts/day Often Homework Quizzes  Essential Skills Quizzes: 5-15 pts Students keep trying until they learn it!  Projects: 25-50 pts  Extra Credit Opportunties: Max 20 pts/sem Several opportunities – esp. during breaks

Goals – Based Units  Unit 3 (1st Semester) & Unit 7 (2 nd semester)  Non-traditional class format  Lessons build on one another  Gives students time and additional resources they need  Goal Quizzes repeated until learned  Grade based on how much material they learn – no unit exam

Thank you for your attention!  Have a healthy year
