Ján Lacika a Izabela Obžerová, 8. A ZÁKLADNÁ ŠKOLA, MALINOVSKÉHO ULICA 1160/31, PARTIZÁNSKE, SLOVENSKO How we solved the task „The calculation of carbon footprint“ How we solved the task „The calculation of carbon footprint“ FROM FOOTPRINT TO FINGERPRINT - KIDS FOR A GREEN TOMORROW (Od odtlačku nohy po odtlačok prsta - deti pre zelený zajtrajšok)

Task proposal for topic 1 General topic about environmental issues/climate changes. Calculate your own carbon dioxide emissions at http://energyworksus.com/carbon- calculator.htmlhttp://energyworksus.com/carbon- calculator.html ENERGY WORKS – electronic calculator for calculation of own CO2 emissions Present in a diagramme the differences in emissions between the pupils at each school for each of the following. Car use: kilometers/year + tons CO2 per year Elictricity usage: KW/year + tons CO2 per year Gas usage: tons CO2 per year Oil heating: tons CO2 per year Air travel: kilometers/year + tons CO2 per year Train travel: kilometers/year + tons CO2 per year Present average results (for task 2) for each school/country. Here we should include results for ”general food and waste” and ”meat consumption”. Present the average number of trees each pupil ”consumes” per year. SETTING THE TASK „CARBON FOOTPRINT“

What is carbon footprint ? carbon footprint is volume of gases it influences the Earth´s climate it is caused by a man it is mostly carbon dioxide the are also : carbon, methane and nitrous oxid

COMPARISON an average carbon footprint of Slovak people is 6,70 tons, an average of industrial countries is about 11 tons, world average for carbon footprint is about 4 tons, world fights for 2 tons. an average carbon footprint of Slovak people is 6,70 tons, an average of industrial countries is about 11 tons, world average for carbon footprint is about 4 tons, world fights for 2 tons.

RESULTS CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS CALCULATOR SLOVAKIA QuantityTotal Tons of CO2 annually Small car (40 mpg fuel economy) 435 miles per month 1,54 Average/medium car (21 mpg fuel economy) 62 miles per month 0,41 SUV/4 wheel drive (15 mpg fuel economy) 10 miles per month 0,1 Electricity usage 324 kwh/month 2,92 Natural/propane gas 424 cubic feet/month 0,08 Fuel oil heating 12 gallons per month 1,6 Air Travel 45 miles per month 0,26 Train Travel 93 miles per month 0,25 General food & waste - how many people in your household? 4 no. of people 7,2 How many people in your household have meat in their diet? 3 no. of people 4,5 Total annual emissions 18,86 tons Total monthly emissions 1,57 tons No. of trees to offset per year 94,3 trees No. of trees to offset per month 7,86 trees Without meat = w. m. Total annual emissions (w. m.) 7,16 tons Total monthly emissions (w. m.) 0,6 tons No. of trees to offset per year (w. m.) 35,8 trees No. of trees to offset per month (w. m.) 2,98 trees

TREES IN COUNTRIES

RESULTS - TREES Every student consumes 3 trees per month

HOW TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT? We can reduce carbon footprint: minimum car driving, don´t buy drinks in plastic bottles, buy saving light bulbs, ride a bike, recycle, washing at lower temperature, don´t buy one off packings, don´t eat a lot of meal, prefer having shower to having a bath...

A WALLBOARD IN ONE OF CLASSES WITH A MESSAGE We have learn to fly in the sky like birds, to dive under the water like fish. There is the only left. To learn to live on the Earth like people.
