1 Northmoor Primary School-Wide PBIS Keeping Up the Momentum

2 In The Beginning… PBIS WAS NEW!! We did whatever it took to keep it going A team with a PASSION Lot’s of excitement Enthusiasm New ideas

3 As time wore on.... Less enthusiasm Same old stuff Burn out Overwhelmed Overworked

4 TODAY, our schools have lots of challenges – Kids are showing up in our classrooms with a wide range of problems/issues – some of which we did not even think of 20 years ago – but we need to work to create an environment in which they can learn –

6 Even in the best of schools, there are a few students who need (crave) special attention, and they will find a way to get it – Like Russell, who when he wants attention, knows how to get our undivided attention.

7 Removing children from our schools is not the solution - If our only goal is to get rid of what’s bad – that will not work – we must work to build and cultivate cultures that support Positive Behaviors. Sometimes a strategy is to wait for summer and then HOPE that the kids will mature over the summer – or not return. We cannot suspend or expel all of the kids that do not follow rules – even if we put them out of school for a period of time – they are coming back – with the same issues.

9  And in many cases, we have not provided the classroom teacher with adequate tools/skills to handle all of the classroom issues that can come up –  In fact, if you think about it, all too often the new teacher reports for work with little or no training/exposure to how to handle disruptive students. When they are completing their student teaching I would argue that the school places them with an experienced teacher who has wonderful classroom management techniques, that may be invisible to the student teacher.  So the new teacher shows up, has Russell in her class, and has no idea how to “manage” the situation.

10 So they send the kids to the corner – to the corner – to the corner – and before you know it they have to teach to the corner because that is where all of the kids are – stacked up, and probably not learning.

12 Plus all the other things teachers do… Improve literacy, and math test scores Make schools safe, caring, & focused on teaching & learning Improve student character & citizenship Eliminate bullying Prepare for middle school education Provide a free & appropriate education for all Affect rates of high risk, antisocial behavior Leave no child behind Keep improving our level of teaching

13 We are being asked to continuously do more – and yet, no one ever takes anything that we are already doing off of the plate – More federal, state, and district requirements More expectations from society at large to do more with kids who bring more and more complicated issues to school with them.

14 And one thing we know for sure - is that time is a challenge – if only we could create that resource – more time might allow us to fix a lot -

16 So – Considering all that! Here we are At yet another meeting Trying to be positive about student behaviors and using PBIS as a process towards that goal But where are we really?

17 What happened to the enthusiasm? Better still - How do we get it back?

18 YOU CAN Create Energy for “OLD” Ideas Provide “NEW” Ideas Provide Useful Info Reinforce Current Situations

19 How do we maintain energy, dedication, forward movement for PBIS? Assess: Where we are Where we want to go

20  If you keep doing what you’ve always done; you are going to get what you always got.  As a team we will -  Determine what is working  Determine what we need to address

22 The Power Of Teaching “If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we …punish?” Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?
