2 UNIT TOPIC: WORD CLASSES LESSON TOPIC: NOUNS AND ADJECTIVES

3 OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1.define word classes; 2.mention the different classes of words; 3. define and give examples of nouns; 4. define and give examples of adjectives and 5.identify nouns and adjectives in sentences.

4 INTRODUCTION Every word that occurs in a sentence belongs to one specific class or another. Word classes refer to the different groups to which words belong. The different word classes in English Language include: Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.

5 NOUNS: A noun is a naming word. Examples: Oscar, Lagos, Tiger, Key, Air and so on. CHARACTERISTICS OF A NOUN: 1.A noun can occur before and after the verb in a sentence. E.g. a. The boy is clever.( before the verb “ is”) b. She killed the snake. ( after the verb “ killed”). 2.Most nouns ( the countable nouns) carry a plural marker-(-s/-es/-ies) e.g. Boys, boxes, lorries. 3.It shows possession. E.g. Mr Oscar’s cane. Joyce’ book. 4.It can be preceded by determiners. E.g. The boy, some water, several students, my house, a goat, an apple etc

6 ADJECTIVES: adjectives are words that qualify nouns and pronouns. Examples include: beautiful, slim, fat, poor, white, wicked and so on. For example: The boy is handsome. The rich man gave me a black belt. She is ugly.
