2 2 PRAMS Background CDC funded in 1987 and data collection began in 1988 to target infant mortality Currently 75% of all births nationwide represented by PRAMS

3 3 PRAMS Methodology Population based surveillance system designed to monitor maternal experiences and behaviors before, during and after pregnancy Use mail and phone methods to survey mothers who recently gave birth Stratified sample of women with recent live birth drawn each month from birth certificate records

4 4 Unintended Pregnancy Thinking back to just before you got pregnant with your new baby, how did you feel about becoming pregnant? I wanted to be pregnant sooner I wanted to be pregnant later I wanted to be pregnant then I didn’t want to be pregnant then or at any time in the future

11 11 Conclusions West Virginia PRAMS data confirm our long held beliefs that a greater number of unintended pregnancies are reported among women who are: younger, unmarried, lower education level and lower income level.

12 12 What is Family Planning? Family Planning (FPP) provides individuals the information and means to exercise personal choice in determining the number and spacing of their children.

13 13 Services Provided by Family Planning: Pregnancy testing Medical history Complete physical exam Overview of all contraceptive options Laboratory services Diagnosis and treatment of STD’s Contraceptive supplies Education and counseling Referral for identified medical problems
