3 Course: Aging Society and Social Work SOWK 634 Aging Society and Social Work: Challenges and Solutions from Three Continents Presentations by faculty and students from Italy, China, and the US Consider attending: Social Work Education in Europe: towards 2025 –29th June - 2nd July 2015 at Milan, Italy - Bicocca University –At own arrangement and expense

4 Seminar Objectives Knowledge Understand some of the basic theoretical frameworks of ageing population worldwide Learn how social policies are defined and implemented in different countries and how this facilitates or creates obstacles in supporting older adults as well as implications for social work Understand Social Work as a world-wide reality and what can be learned from other countries in terms of methods and techniques Values Develop an appreciation of how social work addresses social problems. Develop an appreciation of how diversity and mutual learning at both the micro and macro levels can help in implementing better Social Work interventions. Strengthen one’s value commitment to social and economic justice as the core social work value. Skills Ability to recognize the effects of ageing population on both a micro and macro level in different national contests. Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of enhancing elderly well-being individually and at a group level. Ability to learn and compare at a cross-cultural level the effectiveness of Social Work programs.

6 Three credit course counts as an elective Mandatory attendance Assignments to include reading and paper(s) No pre-requisites Professor Dr. John Orwat (jorwat@luc.edu) Schedule: –Dates July 2- July 7, 2015, Class is daily from 9am -5pm –Two classes before and after (TBA) Course Logistics: Aging Society and Social Work

7 1.Tuition for course- 3 credits –You will be billed through LOCUS as a 3 credit course 2.2. Program Fee- $600 –Non-refundable, paid on time to retain seat 3.Mandatory LUC Health Insurance –Cost is about $30 for one week coverage 4.Arrangements/ Additional Costs (student responsible) –Airfare and ground transportation –Housing –Meals –Tours unrelated to course work is not included You are responsible to ensure fees are paid on time.
