2 AAE 450 Spring 20082 Assumptions:  Ideal Gas  Turbulent Flow  Steady Flow Aerothermal Vanguard CATIA Model Vanguard Gambit Model Modeling Software:  CATIA  Gambit  Fluent

3 AAE 450 Spring 20083 Outputs:  Lift Coefficient (C L )  Drag Coefficient (C D )  Moment Coefficient (C M )  Pressure Distribution  Temperature Distribution  Velocity Distribution  Wall Shear Stress Aerothermal Future Work  Complete CFD analysis for various angles of attack.  Complete CFD analysis for various Mach numbers.  Complete CFD analysis on individual stages. 3D Gambit mesh

4 AAE 450 Spring 20084 Comparison Data: Aerothermal Initially, a replica of the Vanguard is being modeled using CATIA, Gambit, and Fluent in order to do a full CFD analysis. The analysis will then be compared to the Vanguard data in order to perform a “sanity check” for accurate data. The Vanguard Satellite Launching Vehicle p. 13

5 AAE 450 Spring 20085 References:  Professor Blaisdell  John Tsohas  Matt Kube-McDowell  Klawans, B. and Baughards, J. “The Vanguard Satellite Launching Vehicle – an engineering summary” Report No. 11022, April 1960 Aerothermal
