Overview Who: Howard Gardner is the creator of the theory What: Multiple intelligences is the ability for students to learn through different learning styles Importance: Each child is going to have a different learning style and it is important to understand the different ways in which students learn so you can try and teach to these different learning habits. By teaching to a variety of learning styles, you are then giving each child a fair chance at learning

My Interest and Hypothesis I choose this topic because It is important to know how to teach to all the learning styles To give children a fair chance at learning, a teacher needs to understand the different learning styles and how to use them It makes your lesson plans more fun if you can add a variety to them I was planning to learn about the Gardner’s life, the intelligences and the controversies

Research The internet was the main resource I used, but I was able to look up books on google books and read them, watch interviews on YouTube, and find documents with information I found a lot of qualitative data, but for the specific area of my subject that I was researching, I could not find any quantitative data. If my research focused more on the testing, policies, and government involvement then I would have had more quantitative data.

The Intelligences 1. Linguistic: word smart 2. Logical: Mathematical- reasoning, logic and scientific processing 3. Musical: sensitive to rhythm and sound 4. Bodily: Kinesthetic- hands on and body movement 5. Visual-Spatial: art 6. Interpersonal: interacts with others 7. Intrapersonal: interactions with yourself 8. Naturalist: relates to the environment

Questionable Intelligences There are two intelligences that are questionable Moral Spiritual No ways to define them yet

Controversies Against For No way to test multiple intelligences Some intelligences are talents and not actual learning styles Examples: Bodily Kinesthetic leads to athletes and musical leads to musicians People do not like change Allows teachers to be creative when making lesson plans Tests are bias and not all people perform well on tests Gardner believes we can change the school system in 3 ways 1. Political commitment 2. Society needs to see child centered education working 3. Assessments needs to be designed to show children are learning

Once I began my research I steered away from learning about Gardner’s life. I felt it was more important to focus more on the intelligences themselves Bias I may not like a certain intelligence and because I may not like I may not include it in any of my lesson plans. Future use My findings will affect my future teaching career because I am going to be more aware of the different learning styles which means I will make different lesson plans that appeal to them and I will have to make sure I am not bias towards the learning styles I am not so fond of.
