John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 SCAR Working Group on Geodesy & Geographic Information (WG-GGI)

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 Background to GGI 1959 WG Cartography formed 1961 Geodesy and Cartography formed 1988 name change to Geodesy and Geographic Information Chaired By Australia since 1961 24 member countries and observer members from IHO, IAG, FIG, ISCGM (Global Map), GEBCO, JCADM & COMNAP

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 Objectives of WG-GGI Provide support to Antarctic science in mapping and positioning in an unknown continent Coordination & standardisation of surveying and mapping activities To produce guidelines for map production (incl. GIS) and collection of geodetic data To produce and make available homogenous datasets of Antarctica

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 WG Structure Has evolved using umbrella groupings : GIANT for Geodesy related activities GIP for Geographic Information Outreach program for administration and communication

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 GIANT Projects 2000-02 Permanent Observatories Remote observatories GPS campaigns Physical Data Bases URL www.scar- ggi.\geodesy\giant.htm Ground truthing for earth sensing satellite missions GPS and the Atmosphere Tide gauges Geodetic control Data Bases

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 Geographic Information Projects 2000-2002 Spatial standards for GIS SCAR Place names on line gazetteer SCAR Digital Topographic data base KGI GIS On line national atlases On line Mapping Catalogue Bathymetric data base of southern ocean SCAR Cybercartographic atlas on line ANT Imagery catalogue East Antarctic GIS

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 Outreach Program Website building and maintenance newsletters (~7500 individual users accessed the site in the period arrange symposia and publication of papers (eg-Warsaw and St Petersburg) Post guidelines for specific geodetic activities Liaise with ISCU bodies and other NGOs

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 WG-GGI Accomplishments On line composite Gazetteer of Antarctic Place names (~17,000) Five major editions of a Catalogue of Antarctic Maps and Charts SCAR Antarctic Digital Database Mapping standards (now spatial data standards for GIS) Common Geodetic datum as positional basis for all homogeneous spatial data

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 WG-GGI Accomplishments Encouragement of involvement in international cooperative projects Freeing up data through technology transfer Transition to Internet based communication- WG web site for past three years with listserver and newsletters

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 Outcomes from Shanghai WG-GGI Recommends that the group is not disbanded immediately but continues as an group of experts Recommends that all live projects be carried forward Recommends that the scope of the group be expanded to include Geospatial information Recommends that links be formally established to other SSGs, SCAR Standing Groups (+COMNAP data groups) in a new structure

John ManningXXVII SCAR Shanghai, China, July 2002 Finally The last meeting of the autonomous Working Group of Geodesy and Geographic Information closed at 1700 on Tuesday 17th July 2002 after a continuous and productive life of 40+years. Future reporting will be through the Geoscience Scientific Standing Group
