Anticipatory Set

Standards  Writing Strategies 6.1.1  Choose the form of writing (e.g., personal letter, letter to the editor, review, poem, report, narrative) that best suits the intended purpose

Overview (Input)  Different forms of writing have different purposes  When you write, you choose the form of writing that best suits your intended purpose  Your purpose could be to:  Tell a story  Persuade someone  Explain something  Express emotions  Or describe something

What is A Letter to the Editor?  To persuade readers or inform them of a fact.  Choose this form of writing when you want to convince readers to do something, to agree with your opinion, or correct an error or misunderstanding.

How Do I write a Letter To The Editor?  State your facts or opinions quickly, clearly and politely.  Supports opinions with evidence  Since it is intended for a public audience, it is written with a formal tone.  Ex: Business Letter

Let’s Look At One Together (Input) Dear Editor, As you reported in yesterday’s newspaper, the city plans to cut services on the Green Bus Line. I understand that this is being done to reduce costs. However, services should not be reduced. Many kids in the downtown area use the Green Line to get to the library and the mall. Without the bus service, kids would have to walk to those places. It’s over three miles. Further, the route is not safe. Kids could get hurt by passing cars speeding by. I understand that costs are rising, but we need the Green Bus Line. The city should not cut it.. Perhaps we can increase the ticket price. Sincerely, Mrs. Anker
