4 Journal entry If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person? For Jonathan, this is not possible, as we see in Chapter 9 He has frequent flashbacks to life with his father

5 Plot summary Chapter 9 takes place in two settings  Vista Heights and Jonathan’s memory

6 Setting #1: Vista Heights Mr. Roberts presents Jonathan with his test results He shows him his strengths and areas in need of improvement  Strong in reading and problem solving He will have to stay after school with Tommy to work on math Jonathan admits to “almost liking” Mr. Roberts

7 Setting #2: Jonathan’s memory He describes his father’s way of winning over or frightening his teachers  He had one teacher, Mr. Crozier, fired Memories of Jonathan’s life with his father include  Losing rent money in poker games  Helping his father escape from the police  Lying to the police about his identity  Staying in foster homes until his father would come for him

9 Character development – Mr. Roberts What do we learn about Mr. Roberts in this chapter? “Well, Jonathan…I’ve had an opportunity to examine the results of all those tests I’ve been having you complete. You have been a mystery since you came to my class. A student without a past. I must admit I really enjoy solving a good mystery.” Mr. Roberts is dedicated to Jonathan’s learning He is also interested in Jonathan’s past

10 Character development – Jonathan’s father What more do we learn about Jonathan’s father in this chapter? “He would say that he didn’t know if I had enough guys to be a good con man. I thought maybe my problem was the complete opposite. I had too many guts…” Jonathan’s father used him to further his own scams He would often leave him on his own as a child

11 A comparison This chapter compares Mr. Roberts to Jonathan’s father Jonathan says they would be a good match for one another What do they have in common? How are they different?
