2 Scanning service An alternative option for ensuring students get access to high demand texts. Useful when the library: can not get hold of additional print copies an e-book is not available

3 How does the service work? Request a form and complete. Library staff will then: check the required material is covered by the licence obtain the material either from library stock or acquire a copy from the British Library arrange for the material to be scanned and converted to PDF files store the material for access on the Learning Hub collect and submit the required information to the CLA remove material as required by request or licence Contact Jackie McCarthy in the library or e-mail jmccarthy@harper-adams.ac.uk jmccarthy@harper-adams.ac.uk

4 Academic liaison Starting in this next term, librarians will arrange a convenient date to visit you Aims of this service are –To ensure you are aware of what we do –Advise you of the latest services –Help you with stock selection

5 Stock selection Library staff select over 90% of all new book titles Academic suggestions for new titles is poor Want to increase academic input for stock selection – hope this will be improved by the academic liaison

6 Electronic resources E-books: Started with 20 titles in 2009. Currently have 111 – increasing monthly Most used titles last term were Lockhart & Wiseman’s crop husbandry, Management & organisation behaviour and Town and county planning Journals: 411 current titles in print (over 600 2 years ago) 6707 available online Most US/Canadian publications & Springer titles moved to online only from 2012 Databases: FoodLine Web withdrawn Food Science Source introduced giving full text access to over 1400 publications ScienceDirect is the most used database

7 Extended opening hours Self service –5:00 til 8:00 Friday, Saturday & Sunday during term time –10:00 til 5:00 on Saturday & Sunday for some out of term weekends. Staffed –10:00 til 5:00 on Saturday & Sunday for some out of term weekends – generally for the weekend before the start of term Usage –steadily increased throughout term until week 10 –number of visitors is up to 70 per hour depending on time & day

8 How busy we have been 2011 is the busiest year in the library for circulation – over 198,000 transactions! –85% of issues on the Self Issue units –92% of returns on the Self Issue units –72% of renewals on the OPAC Library website (intranet) had 4609 visitors from October to the end of term OPAC had 7417 visitors the Wizard (information skills) had nearly 1000 visitors in the same period Over 2,500 new books added to stock Introduction of Instant Messaging (Meebo), Facebook & blog

9 And coming soon…. Captivate video ‘how to’ guides (i.e. renew, reserve, etc.) New authentication system to make it easier to login to electronic resources off campus
