May 14th 20153 Our learning from engagement Key points taken on board: Strategy needs to look at the big picture and not at sites in isolation Transfers should be made on a regional basis where practicable The use of rail transport should be maximised where possible The amount of construction work undertaken should be minimised where possible

May 14th 20154 Current position - strategy reviewed The new contract requires the PBO to review all Magnox strategies and demonstrate value for the taxpayer The ILW strategy review considered: –stakeholder feedback from previous engagement –progress and learning from delivery of previous strategies –development of new waste routes/options –new ideas and operational experience brought by the PBO –introduction of two new consolidation options for waste management treatment of ILW pond skips packaging of IONSIV cartridges

ILW packaging Changes in packaging strategy: Hinkley Berkeley (for some waste) Delivering value to the taxpayer New encapsulated self-shielding waste packages available: - 6 m 3 concrete box, TRU-Shield package - Same benefits as ductile cast iron containers but present a significant saving

7. May 14th 20157 2. ILW interim storage Changes in interim storage strategy: Consolidation of ILW from Sizewell and Dungeness in the existing ILW store at Bradwell Making best use of assets on a regional basis

Facility could be mobile and move to other sites Trial work ongoing at Hinkley to inform decision making Reviewing best options for decontamination of ILW pond skips

IONSIV cartridge management (new) Transfer of Dungeness and Sizewell IONSIV cartridges to Oldbury for retrieval and packaging (less than ten movements) Onward transfer to Berkeley for interim storage Benefits include: –reduces dose to the workforce –enabler to waste consolidation strategy –saving for taxpayer Avoid the need for three waste packaging projects

May 14th 201512 Regional summaries South West Hinkley – change to new packaging (6 m 3 concrete boxes), no FED dissolution, encapsulation plant, modified ILW store Oldbury – ILW packages to Berkeley, IONSIV cartridges from Sizewell and Dungeness received for packaging, pond skips to go to central facility, FED to be disposed of as LLW Berkeley – combination of DCICs and 6 m 3 concrete boxes, possible second ILW store, receipt of ILW packages from Oldbury
