Why take a fourth year of math? Putting the pieces together…

Can you do the following problems? If 2x – 3(x + 4) = - 5, then x = If x > 2, then In the figure below, both circles have the same center, and the radius of the larger circle is R. If the radius of the smaller circle is 3 units less than R, which of the following represents the area of the shaded region?

Why take a fourth year? To keep you connected to the math you will take in college To save you money, so that you are not registered in a basic math class in college To save you time, so that you are on- track to graduate in four years from college To put you ahead of the game to get college credit in high school; saving you both time and $$

What are my options? Algebra 2/Trigonometry (Math 3) Math 4N Math 4/4H (Pre- Calculus) AP Statistics AP Calculus

Algebra 2/Trigonometry What is covered? –Advanced Algebra –Function Families –Quadratics –Proofs –Exponents and Logarithms –Trigonometry –Probability and Statistics Final Exam? –NYS Algebra 2/Trigonometry Exam in June

Algebra 2/Trigonometry Who should take this course? –Anyone who intends to receive an advanced regents diploma. –Anyone attending college who will be required to take Calculus at some point Prerequisites? –Mastery of Math 3N curriculum. –Teacher Recommendation.

Math 4/4H (Pre- Calculus) Who should take this course? –Anyone attending college who will be required to take Calculus at some point –Anyone who is entering a field in the hard sciences (engineering, chemistry, physics, etc) Prerequisites? –Successful completion of three years of mathematics and a passing grade on the Math B exam.

AP Statistics

As a society we want to have some control over –reducing rates of cancer, heart attack, diabetes and other diseases… –Determining public education strategies to reduce the incidence of HIV As intelligent and curious beings we want to understand things like –Psychic abilities – are they real? –Are left-handed people better at mathematics? As social and curious beings we want to know about other people –Who are they planning to vote for at the next election? –What TV programs are they watching?

AP Statistics Who should take this course? –Anyone who has an interest in learning about a very different side of mathematics –Anyone who is entering a field in the social sciences (psychology, political science, anthropology, etc) or in any research-based field (biomedical sciences) Prerequisites? –Successful completion of three years of mathematics All students taking an AP course must sit for the AP exam in May.

AP Calculus

Who should take this course? –Anyone interested in a career in mathematics, computer science, engineering or the “hard” sciences (biology, chemistry, etc.) –Anyone interested in a business degree (there are college courses just for “Business Calculus”) Prerequisites? –90 or higher in Math 4 / 4H –Juniors currently in Math 3H may qualify – see Mr. Watson for details All students taking an AP course must sit for the AP exam in May.

AP Calculus What will you learn? –The math behind sticking a thermometer in a murder victim’s liver –How to find the volume of oddly-shaped objects –The relationships between distance, velocity, and acceleration Fun stuff we do? –Build models out of food –Sing “calculus carols”
