2 Lesson Objectives: Explain and demonstrate standards for conducting safe laboratory and field investigations. Identify safety equipment and its use. Explain how to use safety equipment. Explain why safety is important in science. Practice appropriate use and conservation of resources, including disposal, reuse, or recycling of materials.

3 Essential Question: What tools and safety standards do scientists use in scientific investigations?

4 Language Objectives: Communicate lab safety procedures with small learning groups using content and academic vocabulary acquired through the use of pre-reading supports such as graphic organizers and visuals.

5 Standards (TEKS): 6.1A: demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations as outlined in the Texas Safety Standards. 6.1B: practice appropriate use and conservation of resources, including disposal, reuse, or recycling of materials. 6.4B use preventative safety equipment, including chemical splash goggles, aprons, and gloves, and be prepared to use emergency safety equipment, including an eye/face wash, a fire blanket, and a fire extinguisher.
