THE HARSH REALITY Shortage of infrastructure and facilities. Poor newborn care, diarrhoeal diseases, acute respiratory infections leading to a high rate of infant morality. 42% of Indian children below the age of 3 are malnourished. Less than 45% of the young are immunized. Public spending on healthcare is abysmally low. 2

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR SCREENING FOR CERVICAL CANCER Liquid based cytology instead of conventional Pap Smear benefits in women in terms of reducing anxiety, uncertainty and the need for repeat tests. PREVENTION OF CERVICAL CANCER The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine prevents infections with certain species of human papilloma virus associated with the development of cervical cancer, genital warts, and some less common cancers. Two HPV vaccines are currently on the market: Gardasil and Cervarix.

IMMUNISATION Prevention is better than cure Many infectious disease can be prevented thereby decreasing both mortality and morbidity Pneumonia and diarrhoea are the major causes for under 5 deaths and vaccines against both are available. There is a need to expand scope of the Universal Immunisation Program to include more vaccines as is done worldwide There is a need to increase the vaccination coverage so that a larger percentage of the total population at risk is covered
