3 ORSP Mission To encourage, facilitate, and support MSU faculty and staff in their pursuit of external funding for their research, education, training, and other scholarly activities.

4 ORSP Services Proposal Development identify, assist, and train faculty and staff in locating possible funding sources review proposals for formatting, accuracy, and adherence to sponsor requirements and guidelines develop budgets that comply with agency and institutional guidelines assist with online proposal application and electronic submission Many others ! 8 Advice for New Researchers Fully utilize ORSP Pay attention to logistics and feasibility - plans for getting work done Don’t underestimate the importance of collaboration Collect preliminary data Become a peer reviewer If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!

9 Approaching Sponsors, Conferences, & Networking Attend Conferences – Network! Discuss your research with potential funders. – NSF and NIH regional conferences provide a great opportunity to interact with agency program staff, while learning about emerging trends and priority areas. Colleagues – Talk to your colleagues! Who is funding them? – Check “acknowledgements” section of published papers/articles. – Review funded awards & abstracts on agency sites.

10 Approaching Sponsors, Conferences, & Networking Contact with Program Officers Highly encouraged & in some cases required. Don’t be scared… be prepared! Summarize your proposed project’s major goals/objectives, methods, and expected outcomes in 1-2 paragraphs, and e-mail the PO. Does your project fall within the program’s current priorities?
