2 COSMOS ●Held at the UC campuses o 4-weeks, different “clusters” o Variety of STEM topics  From astrophysics to marine biology to videogame design o Open to incoming 9-12th graders  Most popular choice  App opens January, due February ●Cost: ~$3,250

3 SIMR ●Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program o 8-week, biomed-centered research, one-on-one with mentor  Immunology, stem cell biology, bioinformatics, etc. o Previous experience not necessary o Highly selective ●Application Period: Dec. 1 to Feb. ●Cost: Free

4 RSI ●Center of Education Excellence’s Research Science Institute ●Extremely competitive, ~30 students in nation o 6-week, one-to-one work with mentors o Projects are Siemens, Synopsys, and Intel STS worthy ●Testing (w/ PSAT), short answers, two rec letters ●Application Starting in November ●Cost: Free + Stipend

5 YSP ●UC Davis’s Young Scholar Program o 6-week program, biological sciences  Vary from labwork to fieldwork to computer modeling o One-on-one work with research faculty ●Current sophomores and juniors (~40 students) ●Application Period: Dec. 1 to Mar. 21 ●Two essays, two recommendation letters ●Cost: $6,200

6 SSTP ●University of Iowa Secondary School Training Program o 5-week, original research under faculty mentor ●Current sophomores or juniors o Quite a few participants return for second year ●Application Period: Nov. 3 to Mar. 1 ●Two essays, two teacher recommendations ●Cost: ~$5,875

7 TIP ●Duke University’s Field Studies Program o 2-week experience, throughout U.S. and abroad o More field investigations, less lab research  Includes not only scientific research but law/literature o Rolling Admissions, relatively high acceptance

8 SSP ●Summer Science Program o 39-day, two campuses, New Mexico Institute of Technology (Socorro, NM) or Westmont College (Santa Barbara, CA) o Three-person team determines orbit of a near-earth asteroid  Build skills in physical sciences, math, computer science ●Current sophomores, juniors (36 students per campus) ●Application Period: Dec. 15 to Mar. 1 o Short answers, science/math rec letters, optional resume ●Cost: ~$4,300

9 SPARC ●2-week program, later in summer (August) o “Applied Rationality”, meta-meta-cognition o How to be cool, meet interesting people, life philosophy o Use scientific tools to model and make the most out of life ●Bayesian Statistics, Cognitive Biases, Machine Learning, etc. ●Application deadline around April ●Cost: Free

10 Independent Research ●Find Labs, email professors o Prepare to email a lot of different places o Research professor’s concurrent projects  Use to personalize emails and communication ●No real time schedule, but contact early o February/March vs. May
