2 The heart of Rhode Island is Narragansett Bay, a sparkling body of gentle ocean water which is considered the state's greatest natural resource. Bountiful fishing and shell fishing, challenging sailing conditions, quiet coves and wide, sandy beaches make the bay ideal for water sports. For more than 50 years, 12-meter yachts competed on the bay for sailing's prestigious America's Cup, earning host city Newport the nickname "Sailing Capital of the World."

3  Some Rhode Islanders speak with a distinctive, non-rhotic, native Rhode Island accent that many compare to a cross between the New York City and Boston accents (e.g. "water" sounds like "wata"). Many Rhode Islanders distinguish a strong aw sound (i.e. do not exhibit the cot–caught merger), as one might hear in New Jersey or New York City; for example, the word coffee is pronounced KAW -fee. This type of accent was brought to the region by early settlers from eastern England in the Puritan migration to New England in the mid-seventeenth century.non-rhoticRhode Island accentNew York CityBoston accentscot–caught merger KAW -fee
