2  Called “The birthplace of Western Civilization”  Is covered in many steep mountains  Not normally rich with natural resources  City-states began to form around 1000 BC  The civilization reached its peak around 400 BC  The country had powerful heritage, which caused the country to flourish  Is a peninsula

3  The capital of Greece is Athens  The 3 main cities are Athens, Thessaloniki, and Petra  About 11.204 million people make up Greece’s population

4  4 types of government: monarchy, oligarchy, tyranny, and a democracy  A monarchy: the ruling power is in the hands of one person  An oligarchy: by a small group of people, small body of individuals  Tyranny: a country governed by an absolute ruler  Democracy: government of the people, for the people and by the people

5  Climate: dry winters, mild, though frost may appear  Hot summers  Precipitation is questionable throughout the year (sometimes lots of rain, sometimes not)  Overall, abundant amounts of rain, dry summers, in between mild and harsh winter  Not much flat land  Some resources were petroleum, nickel, marble, and zinc

6  Most of the people are farmers  Families make a living by growing crops and farming  Currency: euro  They pay with paper and coins  Their GPD (Gross domestic product) is $318,100,000,000

7  Their main language is Greek  Costumes are worn at festivals or are used for special occasions  Orthodox is the most popular religion in Greece  Kids attend school until they are 18  Most schools start the day at 8:00 am  The schools end the day at 1:00 pm  Sunday is a day kids stay home for free time  Main meal is lunch

8  Everyone’s name relates to a saint remembered in the church  Baptism day is extremely important to Greek people (orthodox religion)  In a carnival, the feast lasts 2 weeks  Easter is the most celebrated holiday  A man must ask the girl’s father before proposing to her
