Blogs and Wikis in an Ed. Tech Course for Teachers Describe educational uses for collaborative software tools such as Webblogs and Wiki Webs that allow concurrent users to create and manage information in a website Use a collaborative software to produce a Group paper defining, evaluating and suggesting lessons ideas for collaborative media Rhonda Berger Miami Dade College rberger@mdc.edu

Student Instructions Blogs and Wikis in Education – RWLORWLO Review Student Directions including PowerPoint. Choose two articles to read and review.

What is a Blog? Short for Weblog a mixture is an online journal meant to be public and allow comments. Consists of links, commentary, personal thoughts Generally represent the personality of the author and are established by “bloggers” for a variety of purposes

What is a Wiki? Q. How many Wiki people does it take to change a lightbulb? A. One, but anyone can change it back. How do you know if the information is correct? “As anyone can edit any article, it is of course possible for biased, out of date, or incorrect information to be posted. However, because there are so many other people reading the articles and monitoring contributions using the Recent Changes page, incorrect information is usually corrected quickly. Thus, the overall accuracy of the encyclopedia is improving all the time as it attracts more and more contributors.” More Recent Changes More

The never-ending story…. Multiple contributors Unlike a blog, which has one main identifiable author, a wiki web page may be authored and edited by a number of people. Please, grant me the serenity to accept the pages I cannot edit, The courage to edit the pages I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiPrayer

Lesson ideas carolina.restrepo002 said... carolina.restrepo002 WIKI: Wiki's can be used in all grade levels but since I am interested in elementary education a lesson idea for fifth grade (the grade I prefer to teach) would be best. The subject I am choosing is science. The class would be broken into groups of 4 or 5. Each group is responsible for a topic related to science. Once they have researched their topic and found out enough information, they each type in some information about the topic. Since it's with a wiki they can edit the information of another until they are all satisfied with the final result. This helps them with their grammer skills and it is more of a collaborative project then just writing a paper together. BLOG: For this lesson plan I pick fourth grade and the subject english. The students would be responsible for writing a journal entry about a book they read of their choice. They write what the book is about and whether they liked it or not and why on the blog. This way all the students can read what everyone in the class wrote. Plus, if a child reads about a book that might interest him/her they might get inspired to read it themselves. This activity also helps them with their writing and grammer skills in a more entertaining way than just paper and pen.
