1 President Workshop 95 th Maryland PTA Fall Convention November 12-13, 2010

2 Help! What have I gotten myself into? During this session you will learn:  Overview of organization  PTA organizational rights and responsibilities  the basics for what a local unit president needs to know

3 Overview of organization National association 501 (C) 3 Non-profit Comprised of appx 5 Million members worldwide Over 199,047 members in Maryland Over 964 local units

4 PTA Organizational Structure National PTA Maryland PTA PTA Councils Local Units

5 Organizational Rights Independent, nonpartisan child advocacy group Seek to enact policies and practices that protect children and youth To participate within school board policy To meet with appropriate school officials

6 Organizational Responsibilities To protect access to quality education for all children To seek information on policies, curricula, and laws that affect children To share accurate information with members and the school community To know, help and interact with teachers and administrators.

7 More responsibilities.. Accept responsibilities willingly to assure that the PTA is strong and active To work in a constructive manner To be respectful of the democratic process To be tolerant of diversity of opinions Participate in making decisions affecting policies, rules and regulations

8 Meetings Executive committee- comprised of only the elected officers Board of Directors- comprised of officers, committee chairs and representatives as designated in bylaws. General membership- all PTA members

9 Executive committee Article IX of the local unit bylaws Comprised of only elected officers Duties  Elect standing and special committee chairs  Act in emergencies between board of directors meetings

10 Board of directors Article VIII Comprised of elected officers, chairs of standing committees, delegates to the PTA council and the principal or representative Meetings should be regular the time fixed by the board at their 1 st meeting.

11 Duties of Board of Directors Transact PTA business Create standing and special committees Approve plan of works Present report at general membership meeting Select auditor or auditing committee

12 Duties of Board of Directors Approve and submit an annual budget to the general members for their adoption Approve routine bills within the limits of the adopted budget Fill vacancies

13 Duties of the President Preside at all meetings Coordinate the work of the board of directors Represent the PTA Review and initial monthly bank statements

14 Duties continued File your officer information with Maryland PTA Seek guidance for questions and concerns Know your bylaws
