Discussion Questions Discussion Questions 10/8/14 Journal 1. Compare and contrast mitochondria and chloroplasts. 2. You discover a new cell with a cell wall of a weird material called peptidoglycan which is part protein and part carbohydrate. The cell has no nucleus. The only organelles it has are ribosomes, cytoplasm, cell membrane. What type of cell is it? 3. Please describe the function of the cell wall and explain which types of cells it can be found in. 4. Please describe the lysosome and explain which types of cells it can be found in. UstreamPlantWalls Mahalo Lysosome UstreamPlantWalls Mahalo Lysosome

Reminders You must have all three attached for it to be considered complete and ready to be graded Final Draft of your Research Report is due no later than Friday, 10-10-14. Attach your rough draft, the rubric used to grade your rough draft, and the rubric from your packet. You must have all three attached for it to be considered complete and ready to be graded. By Friday you need to upload an electronic copy of your Final Research Report to turnitin.com. Use Class ID 8634098. Password Bulldog2015 NHS Food Drive If you are growing plants for Science Fair you need to start Cell Root Word Quiz is on 10-14-14 Cell Exam is on 10-16-14 (start reading chapter 7)

QUIZ Clear your desks of everything Do NOT write on the quiz please Use CAPITAL letters please Keep your answers covered If you need to make up a quiz due to an absence… let me know Flip it over when you are finished and hang on to it.

Big Cell QUIZ Clear your desks of everything You may write on it Use CAPITAL letters on the matching please Make sure your writing is NEAT Keep your answers covered Flip it over when you are finished and hang on to it.

Cell Game and/or Computer Cell Type Activity Play the game or Finish the computer activity from Friday or Finish the Cell Theory Chart & Timeline or Finish the power point notes sheet from Wed All of this goes in your journal. Please do not glue it or tape it where the back of your paper can’t be seen.

Root Quiz #3 9/25/14 Print your first and last name List your period Keep your answers covered at all times Each answer is only used once Capital Letters Use Capital Letters! Flip it over when you are finished

My Goals for YOU Pass the EOC/STAAR test with Level III/ Commended rating Develop a love and curiosity for biology because biology is amazing!! AND……….for you to want to come back and join AP Biology your junior or senior year because I want you back in my class!

Good Luck Today Number 2 pencil ONLY Scan-tron: first and last name Hour = Period subject = safety date = 8/27/14 test version will go next to hour (A or B) You may write on the test True = A False = B When you finish with the test, put them in the correct stack on lab table 4 **Pick up the handout “A

Socrative Review Review for tomorrow's test

Cell Types - Virtual Activity Each person needs to complete their own sheet Follow the instructions and complete the handout

Endosymbiotic Theory Endo = within Symbio = living together **Mitochondria and Chloroplasts have bacterial DNA, bacterial ribosomes, can reproduce on their own without direction from the nucleus = once free living bacterial cells that became engulfed by a larger cell. Mutualistic symbiotic relationship. Animal cells only have Mitochondria. Plants have BOTH

Cell Organelles ppt and Cell Structures Handout Fill in the Cell Organelle Chart as we do the power point Put it in your journal.

“Eggsperiment” Mass cup- record in grams Mass egg and cup record in grams Calculate mass of egg and record in grams Add enough vinegar to cover the egg Make and record detailed observations. Include a drawing. Write a hypothesis about what you think your egg will look like tomorrow. Label cup with your group initials and period Put your cup along the side of the lab tables cover with seran wrap and a rubber band

Cell Organelles Worksheet And Cell Analogy Activity Working in collaborative groups of 4-5 each person must complete their own Cell Organelles Worksheet. Place the Cell Organelles Worksheet in your journal and list in the Table of Contents. Be sure to finish it on your own if you don’t finish it today! Tape it down so I can see the back Then, begin working on your Cell Analogy. This will NOT go in your journal. It is to be completed on notebook paper and will be due Monday.

Organism? 5.Give an example of a producer. A consumer> 6.Describe biological magnification. 7.Give an example of an abiotic factor. A biotic factor. 8.Describe an invasive species and give an example. 9.Why does only 10% of the energy move from trophic level to trophic level? 10.How is primary succession different from secondary succession?

Launch Clean the floor around your desk, please throw away any garbage near your desk (yes PLEASE, even if it isn't yours) Words of Wisdom to launch you! “ If you think you can, or if you think you can't, you are right!” Henry Ford

Good Luck Today Number 2 pencil ONLY Scan-tron: first and last name Hour = Period subject = Biochem date = 9/29/14 test no. = A or B You may write on the test True = A False = B When you finish with the test, put them in the correct stack on lab table 4 We have to practice timed tests…so………. You have the entire class period to finish…but you must finish this class period. Watch your time.

My Goals for YOU Develop a love and curiosity for biology because biology is amazing!! Pass the AP Biology College Board Exam with a 4 or 5 (saves you time and $$$$) Have fun this year while being challenged at the college level!

Why I chose to teach I believe: Life should be filled with love, joy, laughter, learning and fun! One way to have these things is to get a good education and great job. The reason we are here is to help one another have these things It is important to “pay it forward” and make a difference in someone else’s life otherwise, why are we here?!?

The New AP Biology Course and AP Biology Exam Teacher is facilitator. Very few Power Point notes from the teacher Learning is Inquiry Based Labs are Inquiry Based Students are given objectives to meet and master.

AP Biology Exam – Usually 2 nd Monday in May The tests will be graded under the direction of the College Board, with scores ranging from 1 to 5. Colleges generally grant credit for scores of 3, 4, or 5, but it is up to the discretion of the participating colleges. Any student wishing to receive college credit for this course MUST check with his or her prospective college NOW to determine what will be accepted for credit.

Exam Information The AP Biology Exam consists of two sections: multiple choice and free response. The exam is 3 hours long and includes both a 90-minute multiple choice section and a 90-minute free- response section that begins with a mandatory 10- minute reading period. The multiple-choice section accounts for half of the student’s exam grade, and the free-response section accounts for the other half.

Section I, Part A, consists of 63 multiple-choice questions Part B includes 6 grid-in questions that require the integration of science and mathematical skills. In Section II, students should use the mandatory reading period to read and review the questions and begin planning their responses. This section contains two types of free-response questions (short and long), and the student will have a total of 80 minutes to complete all of the questions. There will be 2 long Free Response and 6 short free response
