2 What is a mental illness? A mental illness is disorder that affects a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. One out of every _ people has a mental illness.

3 What is a mental illness? A mental illness is disorder that affects a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. One out of every 6 people has a mental illness.

4 What is a mental illness? Anxiety is a feeling of extreme nervousness and worry. An anxiety disorder is an illness that causes unusually strong nervousness, worry, or panic.

5 What is a mental illness? Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder that causes a person to have brief periods of extreme anxiety called panic attacks.

6 What is a mental illness? Panic attacks that are triggered by specific things are called phobias.

7 What is a mental illness? Sometimes anxiety is triggered by repetitive thoughts called obsessions. Some people develop rituals, or compulsions, such as excessive counting or washing, to try to overcome this anxiety. This combination is called obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

8 Depression Tim was worried about his friend Lou. Lou was not eating, he slept all the time, and he never wanted to do anything. Tim thought Lou might be depressed. Depression is not just feeling sad. Depression is a mental illness, and it can be extremely dangerous. Knowing how to recognize depression in yourself and other people can save lives.

9 Depression Depression can take over a person’s life. It can prevent a person from caring about responsibilities and loved ones. Some people who have depression may hallucinate or have delusions. Depressed people may become detached from life by not paying attention to people or events. Without treatment, depression can continue for years.

17 Suicidal Thinking… is the desire to take one’s own life. People who have depression can be in so much emotional pain that they would rather be dead than continue to suffer.
