1 The Last Days of the New Deal  Explain what caused the recession of 1937.  Identify why labor unions were successful during the New Deal.  Explain the effects the New Deal had on culture.  Identify the lasting effects of the New Deal.

2 The Recession of 1937  What was partly to blame?  What was President Roosevelt distressed about? What did he do?  Why was the result predictable?

3 Taxes up production down  FDR feared the rising national debt due to deficit spending (spending more money than the government has). FDR cuts back on government spending. Taxes raised on those who are employed.

4 Looking back on the New Deal  US Debt – YEARS of deficits add up.

5 Unions Triumph John L. Lewis became the first president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, the CIO. The aim of this coalition of industrial unions was to challenge conditions in industry, and their main tool was the strike.

6 In the late 1930s, movies Adeclined in importance as other art forms got more attention. Balmost always focused on the harsh realities of the Depression. Clost money because most people could not afford to go see them. Doften provided temporary escape for struggling Americans.

9 The New Deal ’ s Effects on Culture  Hollywood movies showed common people who triumphed over evil. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington The Wizard of Oz  Zany comedies Marx Brothers  Disney animation Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Mickey Mouse
