1 Writing Skills 2C Run-ons and Compare and Contrast Papers

2 What is a run-on sentence? A sentence that has too many ideas in it. Three ways: More than 2 independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions People have always talked about ghosts, and many books have been written about them, but people cannot agree on their existence. Test: Can you say this all in 1 breath? More than 2 independent clauses not joined by coordinating conjunctions Some people believe in ghosts others laugh at the idea, other people just aren’t sure. A mix of the 2 kinds of run-on sentences One student saw a ghost, and he’ll never forget the experience he believes in them now.

4 Comparison and Contrast (Advantages/Disadvantages) Paper A paper that looks at the good and bad of something. It includes the positives/benefits (good things) AND the negatives/disadvantages (bad things) You will look at one topic and explain both sides.

5 Example: The advantages and disadvantages of living in the country worksheet

6 For your paper: Choose one of these topics and write two advantages and two disadvantages for your topic. Don’t forget to support the advantages and disadvantages with specific examples. 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning a second language in a country where the language is the native language? For example, if I want to study Spanish, I should study in Spain or Venezuela. (Just like you are studying English here in America and not in your native country) 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a roommate? 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city?

7 Format Helpful Vocabulary 10-12 Sentences Don’t forget the title and header! Topic sentence-what are you writing about? Advantage #1 Example Advantage #2 Example TRANSITION WORD: On the other hand, etc. Disadvantage #1 Example Disadvantage #2 Example Conclusion First of all - Firstly In addition - Moreover – Furthermore So- As a result – Therefore However – On the other hand – In contrast In conclusion – To sum up – On the whole – Overall
