5 Meet Mrs. Thoresen… 15 th year of teaching 7th year at Briarwood Went to WSU /graduated from WWU Masters degree in Education with endorsements in Special Ed. and ELL Married 16 years Two children, Jacob (8 th grader at Maywood) & Jaxson (3 rd grader in Mrs. van Heuven’s class)

11 We LOVE Math… Math Workshop Four days a week 8 groups with 4-6 kids in each group Flexible groups (novice- apprentice) formed using formal/informal assessments and need based on our common core standards

12 Daily rotations include… *Hands on manipulatives or games *Work on my own *Teacher time *Practice math facts Common Core Standards/Everyday Math curriculum drive our small group instruction!

19 Homework and Planners… Read and/or be read to at least 4 times a week for 15-20 min. Math 3-4 times a week (should take no longer than 15-20 min.) Sign planners Monday-Thursday Write notes to teachers

20 Student-led Conferences… Conferences will be held on Wednesday, December 3 rd and Thursday, December 4 th. More info to come on how/when to schedule your child’s conference!

22 Assessments in 2 nd grade… Stanford Testing- Week of January 26 th 2015 CogAT- Around March 8 th 2015 Fountas & Pinnell- (Fall/Winter/Spring)

23 Mystery Reader… One of the most fun ways to volunteer… Surprise your child and read his/her favorite book/s to the class Anyone can do it… Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad, etc. Great way to get to know your child’s class! Birthday???? If interested, please sign up tonight or email the teachers to set up a date and time!
