3 The Sector Skills Council for the Environmental and Land-based Sector Role of SSCs In the UK, 25 Sector Skills Councils cover all economic sectors. SSCs are ‘Standards Setting Bodies’ and are responsible for the creation and maintenance of National Occupational Standards (NOS) that describe all ‘tasks’ carried out by workers. NOS include ‘What you need to do’ and ‘What you need to know’. NOS define Occupations by creating detailed task lists

4 The Sector Skills Council for the Environmental and Land-based Sector Occupations in the Land-based Sector Lantra has responsibility for 17 sectors - including Agriculture and the Equine sector, Forestry, Landscaping, Fencing and Fish Farming Lantra has already defined more than 600 occupations in detail for all Land-based jobs. Occupations are defined after extensive consultation with employers in each sector.

5 The Sector Skills Council for the Environmental and Land-based Sector Online Tools Lantra maintains a number of web-based tools to support Workers, Employers, Trainers/Educators and Researchers The main tool is the Online Competence Framework (OCF) All 600 descriptions of Occupations are already stored in the OCF. The OCF is built on 4 powerful databases that ‘map’ the relationship between Occupational Competence, National Occupational Standards, and Education.

17 Job Shop and Job Matching Detailed Occupation definitions underpin a ‘Job Matching’ service. Employers advertise vacancies using standard definitions The database automatically finds the best applicants

21 Other initiatives In UK 8 Sector Skills Councils are using the same technology and have occupation definitions available online. At least 3 other European initiatives that are defining Occupations. Agripass - aids mobility in the agriculture, forestry and landscaping sectors Metals Sector Hospitality sector Europass is investigating adding occupation definitions

22 The Sector Skills Council for the Environmental and Land-based Sector Summary Based on extensive research, standard definitions of occupations already exist in the UK. Other EU projects are working on occupation definitions. Online tools and services already exist to make these definitions available. It is important that projects use the same definitions
