Math and the Common Core An Informational session for parents about the demands of Common Core Eastwood Elementary January 21, 2014

Which number does not belong? 9 16 25 43 Explain your thinking.

Instructional Shifts in Mathematics Shift 1Focus Instruction focuses on concepts that are prioritized in the standards. More time is spend on fewer concepts. Shift 2Coherence Instruction carefully connects learning within and across grade levels so that students build understanding onto foundations from previous years. Shift 3Fluency Students develop speed and accuracy with simple calculations Shift 4Deep Understanding Students deeply understand the math and operate easily within a math concepts before moving on. Shift 5Application Students are expected to use math and choose the appropriate concept for application Shift 6Dual Intensity Students are practicing and understanding. There is more than a balance between these two things in the classroom – both are occurring with intensity

Standards for Mathematical Practice MP 1Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP 2Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP 3Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. MP 4Model with mathematics. MP 5Use appropriate tools strategically. MP 6Attend to precision. MP 7Look for and make use of structure. MP 8Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Critical Focus Areas K-2 Addition and subtraction, measurement using whole number quantities. 3-5 Multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions.
