Mobile data

Introduction Wireless (cellular) communications has experienced a tremendous growth in this decade. Most of the wireless users also access the internet through mobiles. Convergence between the wireless and wired worlds leads to the mobile internet services which would empower the user to access the same suite of applications at work,at home and on the road. The main motive of this is access to services at any moment, from any device, at any place and over any network.

Convergence derived from converge, the latter means meet or come together. In the context of mobile device and web this term encompasses the seamless integration of heterogeneous networks, terminals, applications and content The users of the mobile internet access the internet for short periods of time than the desktop user. So the browsers and applications running on mobile devices should be easier to use than the desktop These device have limited display size, keypads and battery power. Mobile internet delivers a service dynamically based on the user preference or context including the location and integrating voice telephony.

Enabling Convergence In wireless data business users are known as early adapters. These people are ready to pay more money and use the technology. Emergence of SMS with the location technology and browser enabled mobile devices offers the growth of mobile internet. The main three key drivers that will allow this market to thrive. a) Technology Drivers b) Usage Drivers c) Business Drivers

Technology Drivers It focuses on the emergence and standardization of the wireless data network infrastructure, application development and rendering technologies. WAP is the development of this technology driver. It specifies the delivery and displaying the content to mobile devices. It provides set of protocols for the wireless environment, Independent of the underlying wireless network. A second key for mobile data is set of technological advances the provide efficient network architectures like 2.5G, 3G etc These span countries and continents and they can be connected to internet also.

These are designed for efficient use of network and bandwidth. Another key focuses to increase the capabilities and computational power of mobile data terminals. The new generation hand sets are light, versatile and user friendly and supports all types of emerging technologies. Another one is smart card technology for ecommerce and security purposes. Over the Air programming supports automatic updates and settings without any user intervention.

Usage Drivers Mobility needs access to intranet information at a customer site. Mobile Internet user is expected to use the mobile device for small specific tasks that has to be performed very quickly. Besides messaging the combination of compelling horizontal applications will likely include real time information retrieval, ecommerce and communications management services etc….. Data enabled mobile devices are able to receive email, important information and content. It should accept vertical applications such as dispatch service or personal information management application. In the enterprise timely access to corporate information is needed for business access.

Business Drivers Innovation always brings new business models, new markets and new opportunities. Life cycle for high technology market is divided into three phases: Tools, Platforms, Application Tools Phase : Primarily tools and utilities are targeted toward the early adopters. Platforms :Infrastructure providers bring products to the market and seek increasing returns by focusing on the early majority users. Application : This is focusing on value added applications.

User Device Manufacturer Network Provider Infrastructure Vendor Content Aggregator (Portal) ASP Content Provider Content Creator Application Service Provider

Wireless operators provide the services in such a way that to improve subscriber loyalty and airtime usage. They use WAP as a value added service that can be used to retain key subscribers. Wireless operators and content providers will drive the emergence of new and bundling models for subscription based service, electronic commerce and targeted advertising. Infrastructure vendors provide the infrastructure to provide data and voice services. Handset manufacturer provides additional personalized services. Portal providers provide useful information for the mobile internet. End users are those using these value added services.
