October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman6 Review Schedule

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman7 Introduction (2) Plans for upcoming MICE meetings —February 22-25, 2007 at CERN (IDS and FAC meetings just prior) —June ~10-15 at RAL (change from previous proposal) —generally plan two meetings per year at RAL, one elsewhere o try to avoid concatenating with another meeting ISS completed —report preparation under way —summary presented August 21-22, 2006 at NuFact06 Got favorable comments from Marx HEPAP subpanel “We support the MICE project as a critical feasibility demonstration for muon storage rings and colliders.” “...we are concerned that the support for muon cooling is below what is needed to sustain momentum in this program.”

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman8 Goals for Meeting (1) Beam line —issues o target system –test results; heating of drive mechanism; beam test preparation o components –status of PSI solenoid; fabrication of required components o optics design –complete for all needed emittance/momentum values; define tuning/correction schemes, including collimators and control algorithms; finalize diffuser params (size, thicknesses, mechanism) Detectors —issues o review of upstream CKOV and TOF (coming this week!) o tracker (first plane status and QA) o finalize downstream size requirements and scraping estimates (almost)

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman9 Goals for Meeting (2) DAQ and controls —issues o finalize design of system (excellent progress!) Analysis —issues o complete initial run plan (increasingly important) o discuss time measurement approach (in progress) –what is master time reference? o estimate downstream scraping and emittance propagation (in progress; need to settle this!) Software —issues o prepare for MICE data challenge (in progress) –and MICE data!

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman10 Goals for Meeting (3) LH 2 R&D and infrastructure —issues o complete HAZOP and safety report (nearly done) o assess status of general experimental infrastructure —comment o we need to make sure we do not paralyze ourselves over these issues –but, we do need to take them seriously and do them right Mechanism for MICE collaborators becoming RAL users —badging, training

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman11 Goals for Meeting (4) Phase II —issues o status of UK bid o status of coupling coil design and funding proposal(s) o testing of RF cavity in magnetic field  o progress on power source (?) o status of absorbers o status of RFCC module design Phase III —issues o compatibility of MANX and MICE

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman12 Items from Technical Board (1) Reviews —plans are reasonable —PD needs more help in organizing these in a complete and timely way —advise keeping H 2 R&D HAZOP process separate from overall MICE HAZOP process Must “freeze” beam line soon! —complete response to April review —need to define corrector and collimator efficacy and placement Need sign-off on main features of Hall layout —aim for formal sign-off from Collaboration Board Approve front-end electronics —aim for formal sign-off from Collaboration Board

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman13 Items from Technical Board (2) Miscellaneous issues —monitor delivery of refurbished RF equipment from CERN o need equipment by end of 2007 —ask MICE Project Board for list of all required reviews —investigate means to avoid VAT for imported equipment items Schedule —expect beam for beam line commissioning as early as August 2007 o we need to be ready —begin Stage 1 in mid-September 2007 o test decay solenoid as soon as possible

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman14 Beam Line Issues (1) Define tolerances (alignment, field strength, field quality) for all elements —balance of optics vs. engineering work needs to be assessed o need to augment optics effort (MATRIX revisited!) —explore use of ISIS target station 2 correctors o can we piggyback on their order? —check reproducibility of movable quadrupoles Define diagnostic needs for beam line —performance specifications for correctors and collimators more important right now than engineering details o are collimators operated manually or remotely? Investigate matching to solenoid fields other than fixed 4 T —not high priority o could be done after we start running

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman15 Beam Line Issues (2) Validate stay clear diam. for diffuser mechanism —need indicator to verify which diffuser is in Decide how many diffuser thicknesses are required —run plan should answer this —should identify physicist to represent use and control of diffuser Target issues —prepare for beam test this month o need to complete and test high current drive circuit Hall issues —calculate magnetic forces on wall shield plates (at 240 MeV/c field levels)

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman16 Cooling Channel Issues (1) Magnets —decide on AFC changes and formalize (e.g., using cooling pipes rather than liquid cooling) o AFC design to be completed (ready for review) by end of 2006 —finalize spectrometer solenoid power supply specs o need to order soon to meet vendor schedule —purchase initial complement of pulse-tube coolers —develop operational procedures for all devices o spectrometer solenoids, focus coils, coupling coils —need plan for final magnetic mapping with field sensors o some sensors will need to be inside magnet aperture –interferences must be looked at —review engineering design of CC before starting construction o verify that CC does, or can be made to, fit in door of MICE hall o must demonstrate serious problem with existing design before trying to solve it (“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”) o shielding HTS leads; need for LN 2 reservoir (get power outage stats)

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman17 Cooling Channel Issues (2) H 2 R&D system —distribute HAZOP report to MICE TB/EB —complete all safety-related tasks —finalize test location ASAP o aim for running full system by CM18 (June 2007) RF —define method to measure voltage at 1% level o may require beam-based measurements to achieve this Absorber —plan for 24-40 hour fill time Supports —finalize interface with floor

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman18 Detector Issues (1) Need to resolve—and get buy-in—on technical decisions —e.g., detector sizes, final electronics for upstream PID o downstream systems converged last night! —in this context, “impatience is a virtue!” —plan workshop at Frascati (December) to finalize designs o review shortly thereafter (January or CM17) Continue to pay full attention to QA/QC Understand 201 MHz RF backgrounds —MTA tests with Coupling Coil will go a long way toward answering which regime we’ll be in o still stalled on this one! –pursuing CC fabrication in two ways  NSF MRI...again (Don Summers)  ICST Harbin (visit in December) —is background in TOF systems an issue?

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman19 Detector Issues (2) Reserve 2 m clear space around spectrometer solenoid (in “out” position) for UV-free tent during installation —mark footprint on Hall layout drawings Evaluate need for, and availability of, 60 Hz power for VLPC cryocoolers See whether “almost scraped” particles at exit of downstream shield have already scraped elsewhere Check whether budget for CKOV1 is fully covered —don’t forget front-end electronics —test Trieste phototubes with source or LED pulser o base needs modification for high-rate operation

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman20 Simulation/Analysis Issues Need to replace head of Analysis Forum ASAP —proposed new leader has now said yes —good-bye Yağmur, hello John Cobb! Need run plan for Steps 1, 2 from Analysis Forum Need to develop and test analysis software —organize MICE data challenge —understand sensitivity of results to models (mult. scat., dE/dx) Need to settle on order of analysis studies —1, 2, 3, 6, 5, 4? 6 first? Address shortage of effort in this area (even smarter students?!)

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman21 Controls/DAQ Issues Finalize all required hardware, especially front-end electronics —get CB approval Identify person(s) to serve as interface between subsystems and Controls/Monitoring group Fix manpower shortages Decide how to handle (or reduce) data volume

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman22 Commissioning Issues Define how we organize ourselves for commissioning —MICE liaison —shift leaders —shift members —subsystem experts —procedures for dealing with (inevitable) problems Recall that WE are responsible for training our people —and being able to verify that they are trained —see http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/usertraining to get started

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman23 Integration Issues Flesh out drawing tree to include all MICE subsystems Define missing interface details ASAP Give change history when updating drawings

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman24 Uncertainties Will PSI solenoid function properly after long vacation? Will all detectors be ready when needed? —EMCAL, TOF2 (fallback plan proposed) Absorber fabrication —both body and window (identify responsible persons/institutions) Can we get first CC in time to learn from R&D program —can we get approval for MICE CC fabrication in China? Do we have the “person-power” to cover experimental shifts? —and analyze the data in a timely way (“exploitation” phase)

October 11, 2006Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman25 Final Remarks We continue to make progress —time is getting short Be vigilant about opportunities to publicize MICE —tracker paper is in progress MICE management continues to be grateful for the hard work of the collaboration Now 338 days to target date for Stage 1 —beam line starts even earlier!
