2 Finding Sources Tell your partner: What sources do you think would be best to use to try to answer your research questions?

4 How do you know if a website is reliable?

5 Some things to keep in mind… Visual Appearance– Sites that appear more modern (and with less ads) may be more reliable. Author Credibility– Is there information about the author presented? Prior Knowledge– Does the information make sense with what you already know? Organization’s Credibility– Is this website connected with a TV show, book, school, etc? Does the address end in.net or.org or.gov? Ease of Editing – Can this site be edited by anyone or only experts?

9 DEFINITION: Something that actually happened or that can be proved. A fact can be checked with a reference. 10 DEFINITION: A person’s belief or judgment and cannot be proved. CLUES: I believenever In my opinionmust alwaysworst bestall emotional statements EXAMPLE: Wool is the best material to use if you are going to make a sweater. RESOURCES: Cannot be verified.

11 Fact or Opinion? If the statement is a fact, indicate what source you would use to verify it. 1. David Kunst was the first person to walk around the world. 2. Nantucket Island is the best summer vacation spot. 3. Aluminum is used in place of steel in different automobile parts. 4. There will always be more registered Democrats than Republicans.

12 Practice Read the review of Toy Story. (DO NOT WRITE ON IT!) Identify two facts and how you could verify them. Identify one opinion and what clue led you to believe the statement is not fact. Note: the fact or opinion does not have to be an entire sentence. It can just be part of a sentence.
