Life and Times Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was born in Bazentin Picardy in August 1, 1744 He was the youngest of eleven children. He came from a family with a centuries-old tradition of military service. He continued the tradition by serving seven years as an army officer. After working as a bank clerk in Paris he then began to study medicine and botany which became his expertise. Lamarck was the first scientist that tried to forecast the weather.

Life and Times continued Lamarck was a founder of invertebrate paleontology*. At the age of twenty four he studied medicine under Bernard de Jussieu. He was then assigned as an assistant botanist at the royal botanical garden which also housed medical education and biological research. *The study of fossils of animals without backbones.

Invertebrates Few naturalists had considered the invertebrates worthy of study. Lamarck studied these creatures and was credited for inventing the word invertebrate and the classification of invertebrates.

Published annual meteorology reports from 1799-1810 Said to be responsible for naming various cloud types. Cirrus Stratus Cumulus (pictured) Nimbus

Studies of Animal Adaptation Was a zoology professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris where he studied invertebrates for ten years. He concluded that plants and animals change forms to adapt to their environment and passing these traits to their offspring.

Publishing’s Philosophie zoologique-Published in 1809, stated Lamarck’s theories of evolution. The first volume of Histoire naturelle des Animanx sans vertebres-Published in 1815, the second in 1822.-Both stating more facts about invertebrates covering existing classifications. These previously noted works were criticized by his colleagues.

Theories …no body can have life if its constituent parts are not cellular tissue or are not formed by cellular tissue. …time and favorable conditions are the two principal means which nature has employed in giving existence to all her productions. We know that for her time has no limit, and that consequently she always has it at her disposal.
