2 The New Right An alliance of conservative special interest groups concerned with cultural, social and moral issues. blocking the equal rights amendment, and abortion. affirmative action- required employers and educational institutions to give special consideration to woman, African American and other minority groups. Many thought of affirmative action as reverse discrimination, or favoring one group over another based on race or gender An assault to traditional values.

3 Moral Majority Religious
In the 1970s, each week millions of Americans watched on t.v. or listened on the radio to evangelist preachers. Jerry Farwell, a televangelist, formed moral majority. Which consisted of Christians who interpreted the bible literally and believed in absolute standards of right and wrong. The goal of the organization was to bring back what they saw as traditional family values

5 1980 Presidential Election
Ronald Regan vs. Jimmy Carter Regan’s vice-president- George Bush Regan won carried 44 state “Reaganomics” less gov’t, lower taxes, and traditional values.

6 Strategies Cuts in Gov’t spending on social programs. Did not benefit middle class but affected other groups such as food stamps, welfare benefits, job training ETC Supply-side economics- If people pay less taxes they will save more money. Banks could loan money to businesses, which then could improve productivity- Drive prices down

7 Strategic Defense Initiative
Reagan asked scientist to develop a defense system that would keep American's safe from enemy missiles. b-1 bomber MX Missile(Peacekeeper)

8 Supreme Court Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin scalia, and Anthony M. Kennedy Very conservative

9 Cutting back Achieved his goal of reducing the size and power of federal gov’t. Deregulation- The cutting back of federal regulation of industry. Oil, federal health and safety inspections for nursing homes, airline industry Environmental Protections Agency (EPA)- who fought pollution and conserved natural resources.

1984 Reagan and Bush won reelection Ran against Walter Mondale(Carter’s V-P) & Geraldine Ferraro (his running mate) 1988 Michael Dukakis vs. George Bush Bush had the same ideas as Reagan which was what the country was used to Bush won

11 Diseases & Abortions Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS)
*victims were either homosexual or drug users who shared same needles Roe V. Wade & Webster v. Reproductive Health Care Services * The first trimester abortions were protected by a woman’s rights * No woman has the right to terminate a human life by her individual decision

* American students lagged behind students in most other industrialized nation’s “America 2000” * President Bush announced in 1991 in order to allow parents to sell public funds to send their children ( public, private, or religious)

13 Minority group Latinos: 9% of the population and estimated that they would soon outnumber African Americans Asian Americans: 3.2% Native Americans: earned money by campaigning for gambling casinos on their land Pay Equity:Women and Men should get the same jobs depending on their education and physical strength

14 Leaders in Russia Gorbachev is the general secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. *He wanted to establish a democratic government in the Soviet Union; however, Russian reformers thought Gorbachev was working too slowly toward democracy *Gorbachev himself lost his power Boris Yeltsin *President Bush and President Yeltsin issued a formal statement declaring an end to the Cold War in February 1992 In Jan.1993, Yeltsin and Bush signed the START II pact

Sardinistas: The Rebels, who took their name from a rebel leader, fought in a civil war against Somoza (a dictator) in Nicaragua Because Nicaragua was a Soviet Union outpost, Reagan cut all the aid to Sardinistas and threw his support to guerilla forces known as “Contras”

17 The Persian Gulf War On August 2, 1990: Iraq claimed that oil-rich nation of Kuwait was part of Iraq. Then Iraq invaded Kuwait. On Jan. 16, 1991: The United States and and its allies staged a massive air assault against Iraq On October 28, 1991: Kuwait was liberated (Operation Desert Storm)
