Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.20093 EHTEL’s Mission To be the “grid” which creates trust, coherence and consensus between all stakeholders who are interested in using ICT as an enabling tool Founded in 1999, EHTEL is celebrating its 10 th Anniversary During this Decade, EHTEL accompanied and helped to shape eHealth in Europe

Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.20094 A Decade of eHealth The three ages of eHealth are - discovery - acceptance - deployment

Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.20095 The age of discovery 1989 – 1999 A health community was starting to develop which saw IT as more than just patient administration The idea of technology for health emerged as "Health Telematics" An informal group became a community with a mission The goal was common platforms, standards and networks Lots of local, national and some European initiatives appeared

Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.20096 The age of discovery...and it's limits Enthusiasm not enough - need for structure, stakeholders, vision and some high level encouragement. Ministries, hospitals, the medical profession and the large technology companies all had their own agendas Common approaches regarded with suspicion and scepticism, denounced as unrealistic But the box was open!

Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.20097 The age of acceptance 1999 – 2009 Health Telematics had arrived – well established eHealth conferences popped up all over the world An Health IT community began to emerge 1000+ people were working on health IT standards and for "E"-projects were under way But they were talking to the converted and no-one else was listening Out of this emerged EHTEL encouraged by EC

12.02.2009 9 Current Collaboration Models Lack of sensible collaboration model Need to overcome silos and protective interests Current model is still the old Turf War approach: - between primary and secondary health - between specialties - against change - against the citizen service model Focus on cost, generating zero-sum competition Business models not oriented to collaboration Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia

12.02.200910 The age of deployment In 2009 – Where are we? Aware there are no simple answers, no one way forward, no panacea. Clear that eHealth / technology is just one enabler for Transformation Close to having the technology we need but not yet to change mentality / culture Starting to see stakeholder awareness that they are all in this together Agreed about direction but roadmap still unclear

Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.200911 The age of deployment Where we are going Models for Focussing on local care Evidence based medicine Information based care Collaborative care Informed self management An integral technology baseline for balancing resources and demand Chinese walls between stakeholders no longer relevant

Balkan eHealth Conference, Sofia12.02.200912 Mobility as a key factor Centrifugal mobility "Follow me" services Needs: "Doc around the world" Young and highly mobile citizens Transferring the point of care worldwide Centripetal mobility "Come to me" services Needs: "My home is my castle" Elder citizens and patients at home Bringing services into the living room
