2. Lack of Education in Jamaica  William M. MacMillan brought attention to the lack of education in Jamaica several years after Joyce was born.  The rioters of 1937 swept the Caribbean. A state of emergency was declared, and Britain stepped up and offered scholarships, starting in 1941.  William M. MacMillan are the reasons she got an education. (page 273)

3. Daisy Nation  She was a school teacher, and went to one of her students parents Mr. Chance and he gave her an enormous sum of money to send Joyce and her sister to England and pay tuition for university.  Joyce got a scholarship because someone won 2, so one of them went to Joyce. (page 275)

4. Daisy Nation is why Joyce learned to take risks.  Daisy Nation put everything on the line to put Joyce in college  Daisy Nation wanted her children to leave Jamaica and encouraged them to take risks in life. (page 274)  Taking risks is very important in life. If her children never left Jamaica they wouldn’t have the options like go to college or to make something out of themselves.  If people never take risks in there lives they don’t know what they could truly become or reach there potential in something.

5. Defeating the Odds  In Jamaica you are full black, you are less likely to be in Parliament or a lawyer compared to white, light brown, or dark brown people. (page 280) 

6. Daisy’s background  She lived with her older brother Rufus, a teacher. Her brother Carlos went to Cuba then came back and opened a garment factory. Her father Charles Ford was a produce wholesaler. Her mother Ann Powell was educated. Her Grandfather John was a preacher.  Daisy’s background is why she was able to takes risks with her children and encourage them so much. (page 283)

7. Why this Chapter is Important  “A Jamaican Story” tied up every chapter of the story by making sense of it  This chapter gave the author’s own story, and showed how everything in the past contributes to where you are now

8. Essential Questions  Who was the most important person in Joyce Gladwell’s success? (271).  What happy accident was it that is the reason Joyce received a scholarship to University?  Why was Daisy Nation trying so hard to get Joyce into college?  How does this chapter connect every other chapter?  What was Daisy nation’s job?

9. Assessment  Find someone else’s happy accidents, and connect how it leads up to their life now.
