 Do now: Prepare for your quiz on 10.1/10.2 (open notes, no books)  Today, demonstrate my knowledge of the court case Marbury v. Madison, the concept of judicial review, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Corps of Discovery’s mission  10.3 is due by the end of class.  Make sure you pick up 10.4 (due on Monday)  ********Bring a notebook for Tuesday’s class********  Conferences are on Thursday.

 No talking (if you are a disruption in any matter, you will receive a zero).  You may use your notes and handouts (no books, this is considered cheating and will result in a zero).  Once you’re done, turn in your quiz and complete 10.3; if you are done with 10.3, begin working on 10.4.

 France and Britain were engaged in war (again) and the U.S. filled the trade void left by the two powers.  G.B. and France ignored our right to neutrality. Napoleon broke the Treaty of Morfontaine and the British began the impressment our sailors.  However, foreign trade continued to skyrocket to an all-time high (over 100 million dollars in 1807).

 Many Americans were angry with the practice of impressment and wanted war with G.B.  Jefferson, like his predecessors wanted to avoid war.  Embargo Act of 1807: Forbade American to import or export goods… Good Idea or Bad Idea, why?

 Terrible Idea:  Hinder America’s economy  American market not big enough to make up the difference in lost exports  Cost of goods increased dramatically (European goods were often cheaper)  Smugglers  Jefferson was forced to use our army and navy against those that didn’t follow the Act

 Nonintercourse (trade) Act of 1809: Allowed Americans to trade with all countries except G.B. and France.  #Jeffkeepstradition#  Jefferson decides not to run for a third term, encourages James Madison to run  #VA4Life#

Who Wins? By how many votes? Is the support for the Federalists growing or shrinking?

 Extraordinarily well educated  Wrote the U.S. Constitution  From VA  Served as Jefferson’s Sec of State  Short 5 foot 4

 White settlers keep expanding westward causing conflicts with Native tribes.  -The Conflict exists because the settlers and natives are competing for land and resources.  G.B. continues to undermine our interactions with the natives by providing them with weapons and encouraging conflict.

 Agreement is reached between the U.S. government and the Western Confederacy, after the battle of Falling Timbers.  Sets up a pattern: U.S. takes land and gives Natives money…Natives continue to move west.

 Tecumseh-a Shawnee leader successfully unites several tribes to defend their land from westward settlers.  Tecumseh’s brother – “The Prophet” was the spiritual leader of the new confederation.  Obstacles : Rival tribes refused to unite and follow Tecumseh…Tecumseh will be killed and the movement will fall apart.

 Led by Henry Clay of KY  Motives: Nationalism: Pride in one’s country To seize Canada To stop Britain from seizing our ships To end British aid to Native Americans in the West To take Florida from Spain, Britain’s ally. Still some Americans were weary of going to war

 GB begins a blockading some American ports, in order to prevent us from trading with the French.  Hartford Convention: New England states discuss leaving (seceding) the Union if “Mr. Madison’s” war takes place.  House 79 to 49, Yes  Senate 19 to 13, Yes  It’s TIME FOR WAR!!!!!!!!!!
