3.  France and Britain were engaged in war (again) and the U.S. filled the trade void left by the two powers.  G.B. and France ignored our right to neutrality. Napoleon broke the Treaty of Morfontaine and the British began the impressment our sailors.  However, foreign trade continued to skyrocket to an all-time high (over 100 million dollars in 1807).

4.  Many Americans were angry with the practice of impressment and wanted war with G.B.  Jefferson, like his predecessors wanted to avoid war.  Embargo Act of 1807: Forbade American to import or export goods… Good Idea or Bad Idea, why?

9.  White settlers keep expanding westward causing conflicts with Native tribes.  -The Conflict exists because the settlers and natives are competing for land and resources.  G.B. continues to undermine our interactions with the natives by providing them with weapons and encouraging conflict.

10.  Agreement is reached between the U.S. government and the Western Confederacy, after the battle of Falling Timbers.  Sets up a pattern: U.S. takes land and gives Natives money…Natives continue to move west.

11.  Tecumseh-a Shawnee leader successfully unites several tribes to defend their land from westward settlers.  Tecumseh’s brother – “The Prophet” was the spiritual leader of the new confederation.  Obstacles : Rival tribes refused to unite and follow Tecumseh…Tecumseh will be killed and the movement will fall apart.
