Narratives What’s in a story?

What is a narrative? A narrative is a story that is usually used to entertain, motivate or teach. It aims to get attention and keep the reader interested. Examples of narratives include: ◦ Fairy tales ◦ Legends and myths ◦ Science fiction ◦ Adventure stories

Parts of a Narrative The parts of a narrative are... ◦ Orientation ◦ Complication ◦ Events ◦ Resolution ◦ Conclusion

Orientation Sets the scene and introduces the characters Usually includes: ◦ When, Where, Who or What This part needs to ‘hook the reader in’ to wanting to read on!!! ◦ On a dark and stormy night... ◦ It was a beautifully, sunny day when something terrible happened...

Complication This is the dilemma or problem that sets off events. Ideas for complications could be: ◦ Some kids get lost in the woods ◦ Jim fails his maths test and is going to get in trouble ◦ A rocket gets lost in outer space ◦ Sara wants to locate a hidden treasure There are tons of things to use!!!!!

Events These are triggered by the complication. This is where the characters try to solve the problem. Use words like ◦ Then ◦ Next ◦ Later Use paragraphs to separate events.

Resolution This is where the complication is solved. The ending or the description of the final outcome.

Conclusion Brings the story to an end... Often in fairy tales the conclusion is, ‘and they all lived happily ever after.’ You may have a moral at the conclusion of your story as in most fables.
