2 National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR) Develops policy on research and development (R&D) to reflect the health and social care priorities of the Welsh Government Aims to support the creation of high-quality evidence to inform policy and benefit patients and the public Commissions and directly funds R&D activity

3 i4i programme objectives To advance the translation of healthcare technologies for increased patient benefit through guided progression of innovative medical technologies

4 Invention for Innovation (i4i) NIHR England - manage programme - single entry point for applications NISCHR support for: –Wales based researchers –Product Development award

5 Projects Developing medical devices, active implantable devices and in vitro diagnostic devices (defined by EU Directive 2007/47/EC, 90/385/EEC, 98/79/EC) Projects which are utilising and developing techniques or technologies from a different industry sector, which could have a potential impact if applied in a healthcare setting.

6 Overview NISCHR: £3.1million / 10 projects NIHR commitment £16 million / 27 projects Funding award determined by the scale and nature of research Awards 1-3 years

7 Eligibility Lead applicants must be based in England and Wales Key contributors to the project must be represented as co-applicants Funding can be awarded to NHS organisation, HEI or industry SME’s are welcome

8 Project entry and exit points Entry Applications must be informed by evidence obtained through prior basic research Exit Proposed projects are expected to fall along the development pathway up to a point where an advanced prototype medical device or technology has been tested within the laboratory Clinical testing is also permissible until product is ready for formal clinical efficacy and utility trials

10 Points to consider Clinical unmet need clearly articulated Applications must show high degree of technical innovation Appropriate expertise within team Clear and credible plan for introduction into the NHS

11 S election criteria Quality of outline and full applications Demonstrable evidence that a novel technology or intervention will deliver benefits to patients Relevance of research to needs of NHS Strength of project team Strength of business / commercialisation plan Economic case
